Mark Forsyth, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Etymologicon, was interviewed on Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio last week – you can listen it again here.
And here he his explaining the origin of the word ‘barracking’ – for which the English have the Aussies and the Ashes to blame, even if the word means the opposite in the UK to what it does down under:
