The Daily Mail publish the first instalment of their serialisation of Mark Forsyth’s brilliant new book The Horologicon today.

In their words, the book ‘reveals host of absurd yet evocative English words waiting to be discovered’ and the extract today focuses on the first part of the day, with Mark unearthing words like uhtceare, meaning ‘lying awake before dawn and worrying’  and swale, which means, precisely, ‘windy, cold and bleak.’

Read the extract in full here and more about the book – which is published on Thursday – here.
