“A room without books is like a body without a soul,” Cicero.
One might say the same of an ereader. If you have been lucky enough to receive one of these for Christmas, here’s a Yuletide selection of Icon’s titles available in ebook form, and some available as real books and ebooks with which to start a new leaf, a New Year, or simply a new train of thought.
For those wishing to load an ereader with thought-provoking, quality non fiction:
There are 23 Icon titles at bargain prices in this year’s 12 Days of Kindle promotion, from Nessa Carey’s The Epigenetics Revolution, an account of the advances in epigenetics research (how DNA is more like a script – liable to cuts, different interpretations and poor direction – than we thought), to Mark Forsyth’s erudite The Horologicon (with appended Drinker’s Dictionary, in case you needed more words for festive imbibing).
For those wishing to turn over a new leaf (or simply read about the science behind why it’s the first twenty minutes of exercise that count):
The First Twenty Minutes by Gretchen Reynolds is based on her fitness column for the New York Times, and explains what kind of exercise – and how much – really works. It also contains the surprising revelation that male genitals shrink with age if a man is mostly sedentary – but not if he regularly exercises…
Icon’s Practical Guides series has four new titles for the New Year: Introducing How to Get the Job You Want, Introducing Assertiveness, Introducing Body Language and Introducing Emotional Intelligence.
For those wishing to impress collected friends and relatives with their knowledge:
Using for each idea or theory a mere two pages, 300 words, and one picture, the 30-second Series makes you an instant expert on subjects from Fermat’s last theorem to Keynes’ economic theories.
The ebooks of 30-Second Economics, 30-Second Politics, 30-second Psychology and 30-second Maths are all in Kobo’s Christmas promotion at 50% off.
