Colin Evans’ gripping account of the case of Charles Stielow, a farm labourer wrongly accused of a double murder in New York state in 1916, has been shortlisted for a major crime writers award. Congratulations to Greg Grandin, whose brilliant tale of Henry Ford’s hubristic attempt to build an American town in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, has been shortlisted for the prestigious James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Biography, worth £10,000 to the winning author. Dear parent: why your dyslexic child struggles with reading

Maryanne Wolf, author of Proust and the Squid, has a piece in the Guardian which attempts to explain to parents of dyslexic children what it is that causes them struggle with reading. ‘Not all children with dyslexia have extraordinary talents, but everyone has a unique potential that is being daily whittled away by this lack of understanding [of what dyslexia really is],’ she says. Delusions of Gender is reviewed on Sophia Network, a site taglined ‘wisdom for women in youth work’. ‘The book is biased,’ the reviewer says. ‘It is clearly trying to put forward a case against stances such as Men are from Mars, Women from Venus, but in a society where these views seem to be the accepted norm I found the book a refreshing and challenging read.’ Read the full piece here.
