David Gower’s Half-Century

David Gower’s Half-Century (eBook)

The 50 Greatest Cricketers of All Time

David Gower

Former England captain and impeccably stylish batsman David Gower, himself inducted into cricket’s Hall of Fame, here takes a leap of faith and names his 50 greatest players of all time.

Going back through the history of the game, he honours the finest run-getters, wicket-takers, glove men and captains he played with and against, as well as those he has been able to observe as a spectator or commentator, and legendary achievers from earlier eras. Full of first-hand recollections and anecdotes, this book is sure to delight – and occasionally infuriate – cricket enthusiasts everywhere.

Who was the best of the great West Indian quicks? Have England heroes like Boycott, Pietersen and Flintoff made the cut? Who has been the greatest Australian batsman, post-Bradman? All is revealed in this lively and contentious celebration of cricket’s true greats.

DAVID GOWER made his mark on the game through the 15 years of his international career from the late 1970s onwards as an elegant and at times prolific left-handed batsman. His finest year came in 1985 when he captained England to victory in the Ashes and in the process set a new record for the most runs in a home Ashes series for an England captain. Sadly not every series as captain reaped quite the same success and he is still waiting for the scars to heal after ‘leading’ England through two 5–0 defeats at the hands of the all-powerful West Indies teams of the mid-1980s. David’s second career as a broadcaster with, in order, Channel 9, the BBC and Sky Sports has seen him establish himself as a calm and measured judge of the game. It is with those qualities to the fore that he has turned his mind to picking his 50 all-time greats.

A host of keen insight, reflection and whimsy from a lifetime in the game. All Out Cricket
A fascinating list full of facts and anecdote that is a must for any cricket lover. The Good Book Guide

Work Fuel

Work Fuel (Paperback)

The Productivity Ninja Guide to Nutrition

Colette Heneghan

Graham Allcott

We all know the benefits of healthy eating, but in practice, it’s often
just not compatible with a busy, working lifestyle. Grabbing food on the go
between meetings, before you rush to the gym, after catching up with friends –
there’s just not enough time to be fussy – what you eat often takes a backseat.

But what if that didn’t have to be the case? What if what you were
eating actually gave you more time; boosting your productivity, increasing your
focus, and ensuring that you didn’t fall victim to that daily 3pm energy slump?

Productivity and nutrition experts Graham Allcott and Colette Heneghan
present a new way to think about what you eat: the Productivity Ninja way. A
new book in the bestselling Productivity Ninja series, Work Fuel shows
you how eating well can and should fit into your lifestyle, however busy it is.
From surviving conferences and work trips to how to best put together your food
shopping list, Work Fuel provides you with an investment plan,
promising to improve your performance, focus and energy by changing the way
that you eat.

Colette Heneghan is a Peak Performance & Nutrition Coach, with extensive experience gained working with some of the world’s largest technology companies, as well as with professional sports players and teams. She has designed, managed and delivered successful, high-impact health and wellbeing programmes across the world, ensuring that people thrive, not just survive in their competitive and challenging roles and industries.

Graham
Allcott

Best of Enemies

Best of Enemies (Hardback)

Britain and Germany - 100 Years of Truth and Lies

Richard Milton

Richard Milton exposes the secrets of a relationship steeped in mutual admiration, blood and propaganda. In August 1914, Britain’s first act of war was not to mobilise its army or the Grand Fleet. It was to cut cables preventing German propaganda from reaching American newspapers. This war of words would quickly become as vicious as the slaughter on the Western Front. For a century, Britain and Germany had been closer than any other two countries. Germany was Britain’s biggest export market, and vice versa. Germans adopted English dress, customs and manners. German thinking on race, national identity, eugenics, and racial supremacy also had its roots in British thinkers like Darwin, Huxley and Galton. Even as late as the Nazi era, Hess, Himmler, Goering and Hitler himself remained passionate Anglophiles.During WW1, however, Germany, Britain and the USA spent billions on clandestine propaganda to blacken each other’s reputations. This gargantuan effort gave birth to the PR industry itself – later seized upon by Nazi propagandist Goebbels to devastating effect.Richard Milton’s expertly written popular history gives a fresh perspective on this tumultuous, painful love-hate relationship, and is also a brilliant study of propaganda itself – now more than ever a vital weapon of war.

Richard Milton is a writer, journalist and broadcaster who also works as a PR consultant. He is a principal presenter for The PR Training Centre in London and has lectured in PR and Journalism at Buckingham University. His other books include The Facts of Life (Fourth Estate, 1992) and Forbidden Science (Fourth Estate, 1994).

Britain and Germany - Truth and Lies in Two World Wars

Introducing Empiricism

Introducing Empiricism (Paperback)

Our knowledge comes primarily from experience. But is experience really what it seems? Is it reliable? Empiricist philosophers accept a ‘commonsense’ view of the phenomena we observe and yet conclude that all we can ever know are ‘ideas’. Physical reality may not exist at all! The experimental breakthroughs of Kepler, Galileo and Newton – a radical new outlook in 17th-century science – informed this great British tradition in philosophy. Introducing Empiricism outlines the arguments of Locke, Berkeley, Hume, J.S. Mill, Bertrand Russell, and the last British empiricist, A.J. Ayer. It also looks at criticisms of empiricism in the work of Kant, Wittgenstein, Karl Popper and others.
