Socrates vs. Jesus

Socrates vs. Jesus (Hardback)

The Struggle for the Meaning of Life

Steve Fuller

In this seasonal intellectual broadside, iconoclastic popular sociologist Steve Fuller reclaims Jesus as a philosophical thinker – and one who really puts his money where his mouth is – Socrates and Jesus are among Western culture’s most iconic figures. They are even offered as exemplars of what it means to be human. Both are notable for their forthright views on the extent of moral obligation and the limits of knowledge, the meaning of life and the prospects of an afterlife. They were also both ‘celebrities’, and both died to make a point. But how do the lives of Socrates and Jesus look to 21st century eyes? Would either attract a following today? Steve Fuller compares Socrates and Jesus as a guides to living today and, in a point that will prove controversial to our secular reverence for Socrates, he argues Jesus is the more demanding philosopher – and that Socrates is really just a Christ-lite.

Steve Fuller is Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick. He is the author of Dissent over Descent (Icon, 2008), Kuhn vs. Popper (Icon, 2003) and many other books.

Scientists Anonymous

Scientists Anonymous (Paperback)

Great Stories of Women in Science

Patricia Fara

Why, when girls outstrip boys in exams, are there still so few women in the top levels of science? Why have women been excluded and is there still discrimination? Acclaimed science writer and children’s author Patricia Fara investigates science past and present to find the answers. She examines women scientists’ struggle against unequal opportunities, and shows how they have succeeded despite the obstacles stacked against them. The renowned names are here ? Marie Curie, Florence Nightingale, Rosalind Franklin ? but Scientists Anonymous also reveals the forgotten contributions of many other dedicated and brilliant women. Combining history, science and biography, Fara presents the stories of female explorers, mathematicians, astronomers and chemists from all over the world.

Patricia Fara is a Fellow of Clare College at the University of Cambridge where she teaches history of science. She is an expert on magnetism in the eighteenth century, and has also written and lectured widely on scientific portraits, the northern lights and international exploration. Her most recent book, Newton: The Making of Genius, examines how Newton came to be celebrated as a national hero and the world’s first scientific genius.

‘Fara is an exhaustive, encyclopaedic guide to the achievements, both celebrated and unsung, of women in science, scrupulous about setting these in their historical and cultural contexts, explanatory without being didactic and immensely readable.’ Jan Mark, Guardian

The Red Bodyguard

The Red Bodyguard (Paperback)

The Amazing Health-promoting Properties of the Tomato

Ron Levin

Gerald Cheshire

It is virtually impossible to open a newspaper or magazine without seeing yet another piece about the health merits, or otherwise, of a popular item of food. Claim and counterclaim can often leave the ordinary person very confused. We do, at least, know that we should eat five portions of fruit and veg every day. But are all these foods equal? One, in particular, has become the focus of extensive worldwide research. Furthermore, it’s delicious, inexpensive and virtually free from any unwanted effects. It is, amazingly, the humble tomato. Ron Levin, a former research pharmacist, unwraps the evidence garnered by hundreds of scientists, working in over 22 countries since 1980, in a readily digestible form. A rare mixture of practical health advice and deftly written popular science, “The Red Bodyguard” reveals that cooked and processed tomatoes are the best form, and that coronary heart disease, prostate cancer and possibly much more should fear this incredible fruit.

Ron Levin, a qualified pharmacist, was until retirement in 2002 Managing Director of a very successful Johnson & Johnson subsidiary pharmaceutical company in the UK.Gerald Cheshire is the author of over 100 books including the Collins Gem: Chemical Elements and Science Essentials: Physics Series.See more at the books’ website: www.theredbodyguard.co.uk

Quantum

Quantum - cover coming soon

Quantum (Hardback)

Einstein, Bohr and the Great Debate About the Nature of Reality - Illustrated Edition

Manjit Kumar

‘This is about gob-smacking science at the far end of reason … Take it nice and easy and savour the experience of your mind being blown without recourse to hallucinogens’ Nicholas Lezard, Guardian

For most people, quantum theory is a byword for mysterious, impenetrable science. And yet for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves.

In this magisterial book, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly-written history of this fundamental scientific revolution, and the divisive debate at its core. Quantum theory looks at the very building blocks of our world, the particles and processes without which it could not exist.

Yet for 60 years most physicists believed that quantum theory denied the very existence of reality itself. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar shows how the golden age of physics ignited the greatest intellectual debate of the twentieth century.

Quantum theory is weird. In 1905, Albert Einstein suggested that light was a particle, not a wave, defying a century of experiments. Werner Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and Erwin Schrodinger’s famous dead-and-alive cat are similarly strange. As Niels Bohr said, if you weren’t shocked by quantum theory, you didn’t really understand it.

While "Quantum" sets the science in the context of the great upheavals of the modern age, Kumar’s centrepiece is the conflict between Einstein and Bohr over the nature of reality and the soul of science. ‘Bohr brainwashed a whole generation of physicists into believing that the problem had been solved’, lamented the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann. But in "Quantum", Kumar brings Einstein back to the centre of the quantum debate. "Quantum" is the essential read for anyone fascinated by this complex and thrilling story and by the band of brilliant men at its heart.

Manjit Kumar is the editor of Prometheus, a journal that covers the arts, sciences and humanities and has written for the Guardian, the TES and the Irish Times. He is the co-author of Science and the Retreat from Reason, an adapted chapter of which Michael Frayn described as ‘the clearest account I’ve read yet of the development of quantum mechanics.’

The New Rome

The New Rome (Hardback)

The Fall of the Roman Empire and the Fate of America

Cullen Murphy

Vanity Fair’s US editor-at-large pits the modern USA against the might of the Roman Empire – and finds two very similar opponents. The rise and fall of ancient Rome has always been a metaphor for America, but here Cullen Murphy ventures past the obvious, bringing the brutal colours of Rome and the complexities of today’s USA together in this beautifully written, intelligent and hugely readable book. He explores how the two populations saw their political elites, and the insular cultures of Washington and Rome. He looks at the consequences of military overstretch and the widening gap between military and civilian society. Murphy sees both states weakened through ‘privatisation’ and vexed by the paradoxical issue of borders.Pressingly, he argues that America most resembles Rome in the burgeoning corruption of its government and in its arrogant ignorance of the world outside; in these conditions, idealism, however well-meant, can too easily be a form of blindness. Lively and richly peppered with historical stories, Murphy’s book brings the ancient world to life, and casts today’s biggest superpower in a provocative new light.

Cullen Murphy is the editor-at-large of Vanity Fair magazine. He was previously, for two decades, the managing editor of the Atlantic Monthly. He lives and works at his home near Boston.

‘Murphy is a beguiling writer with a good eye for detail, who has read widely among both ancient writers and modern historians of Rome.’Noel Malcolm, Sunday Telegraph
‘Mesmerising’Financial Times
‘Provocative and lively’New York Times
‘A nuanced and convincing view’Esquire (US)
‘A lovely book – elegant but playful, as reasonable as it is amiable … It may be the most important thing written about the U.S. government in many years.’Thomas E. Ricks, Military Correspondent, Washington Post

Monsieur le Vet

Monsieur le Vet (Paperback)

My Life with Animals in Rural France

Sylvain Balteau

The hilarious, poignant and sometimes bizarre stories of an extraordinary vet in rural France Sylvain Balteau works as a village vet in the Pyrenees. Equally at home with a sick hamster as with a pregnant Charolais cow, he is permanently on call, immersed in the daily dramas of animals and their people. Since 2007 he has kept a blog, revealing the hidden side of a vet’s work and the rich variety of French rural life. As well as caring for the usual puppies and elderly cats, he tries to save a man’s pet piglet and patches up hunting dogs after the annual wild boar hunt. Then he can be found carrying a newborn calf into a remote farmhouse to warm up by the fire, or pleading with a farmer’s wife on the verge of a heart attack who insists that the vet see her sick cow first … Through his work with their animals, Sylvain gains a privileged insight into the people who live with them. In this profound and unsentimental book, he discovers that, in order to love animals, you can’t help but love people as well.

Sylvain Balteau, 36, has lived in a French village in the Haute-Garonne, at the foot of the Pyrenees, all of his life . He trained as a vet in Toulouse and started keeping a blog of his life in 2007. This is his first book. He speaks English fluently.

Mafia Son

Mafia Son (Paperback)

The Scarpa Mob Family, the FBI, and a Story of Betrayal

Sandra Harmon

The Scarpas were a Mafia dynasty led by Greg Scarpa Sr., a man addicted to murder. His son, Gregory Jr., worshipped his ruthless father, and was slowly drawn into his dark world. What only father and son knew was that for thirty years Scarpa Sr. was an FBI informant. For decades, his connection to the FBI granted him a virtual license to kill. But when facing arrest in the late 1980s, Scarpa asked his son to leave his wife and children, and take the rap for his father. In 1995, imprisoned alongside Ramzi Yousef, architect of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Greg agreed to extract information from Yousef in exchange for leniency, furnishing the FBI with detailed intelligence on what would result in 9/11. Incredibly, Greg’s desperate warnings were unheeded, and he was sentenced to forty-years-to-life at the notorious ADMAX. Told through Sandra Harmon’s incredible, intimate access to the book’s key characters, “Mafia Son” is an unforgettable tale of violence, wealth, and sex, set in a world where a man’s word is both everything and nothing.

Sandra Harmon is the author of several bestselling books, including ELVIS AND ME, which she coauthored with Priscilla Presley. In MAFIA SON, Harmon was granted intimate access to the principals of the book–access that eventually got her subpoenaed in the highly publicized Lindley DeVecchio trials.

Introducing Mind and Brain

Introducing Mind and Brain (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Angus Gellatly

Oscar Zarate

How do emotions affect your basic decision making? Why do certain smells prompt long-forgotten memories, and what makes us suddenly self-conscious?

How does the biological organ, the brain, give rise to all of the thoughts in your head – enable you to think, to feel, to be conscious and aware – to have ‘a mind’?

Introducing Mind and Brain explains what the sciences have to say about planning and action, language, memory, attention, emotions and vision. It traces the historical development of ideas about the brain and its function from antiquity to the age of neuro-imaging.

Clearly explained by Professor of Psychology Angus Gellatly and award-winning artist Oscar Zarate, they invite you to take a fresh look at the nature of mind, consciousness and personal identity.

Angus Gellatly was Professor of Psychology and Head of Department at Keele University and is now at the Open University. He used to write fiction in the days when he had the time.

Oscar Zarate is a highly acclaimed graphic artist who has illustrated many Introducing titles. His prize-winning graphic novel A Small Killing is known throughout the world.
