Losing It (eBook)

How We Popped Our Cherry Over the Last 80 Years

Kate Monro

In an increasingly sexualised world, how we lose our virginity remains an untold story. Inspired by her Cosmopolitan award-nominated blog, The Virginity Project, Kate Monro sets out to ask men and women from every walk of life, how did it happen for you? Losing It brings together an astonishing collection of stories.

From the experiences of Edna, who lost her virginity in 1940 aged 25, to Charlie, a young, disabled punk rocker whose first-time experience many able-bodied people would envy, Kate reveals the poignant, funny and often surprising truth about other people’s most intimate sexual stories.

Described by the Evening Standard as ‘London’s foremost virgin inquisitor’, Kate Monro, 42, is a blogger, author and journalist.

Cracked (eBook)

Why Psychiatry is Doing More Harm Than Good

James Davies

Why is psychiatry such big business? Why are so many psychiatric drugs prescribed – 47 million antidepressant prescriptions in the UK alone last year – and why, without solid scientific justification, has the number of mental disorders risen from 106 in 1952 to 374 today?

The everyday sufferings and setbacks of life are now ‘medicalised’ into illnesses that require treatment – usually with highly profitable drugs. Psychological therapist James Davies uses his insider knowledge to illustrate for a general readership how psychiatry has put riches and medical status above patients’ well-being. The charge sheet is damning: negative drug trials routinely buried; antidepressants that work no better than placebos; research regularly manipulated to produce positive results; doctors, seduced by huge pharmaceutical rewards, creating more disorders and prescribing more pills; and ethical, scientific and treatment flaws unscrupulously concealed by mass-marketing.

Cracked reveals for the first time the true human cost of an industry that, in the name of helping others, has actually been helping itself.

James Davies obtained his PhD in medical and social anthropology from the University of Oxford. He is also a qualified psychotherapist (having worked in the NHS), and a senior lecturer in social anthropology and psychology at the University of Roehampton, London. He has delivered lectures at many universities, including Harvard, Brown, CUNY, Oxford and London, and has written articles about psychiatry for the New Scientist, Therapy Today and the Harvard Divinity Bulletin.

He is author of The Importance of Suffering: the value and meaning of emotional discontent (Routledge, 2011). He lives with his wife and daughter in Shepherd’s Bush, London.

Jilted Generation (eBook)

How Britain Has Bankrupted Its Youth

Ed Howker

Shiv Malik

‘Should be read as a strident call to arms for a partially disenfranchised generation that is burdened with debt.’The Times

‘No parent can dismiss this argument about our collective failure to invest in the future’ The Guardian

Why are so many adult children living still living with mum and dad? Why do young people seem so disinterested in politics? And what are the hidden threats to Britain’s long-term prosperity lurking in the next few decades?

First published in 2010, Ed Howker and Shiv Mailk’s Jilted Generation answers fundamental questions about the society you thought you knew. It identified, for the first time, the perilous position of Britain’s young adults and, with a title brandished by everyone from Ed Miliband to student protesters, the book’s thesis has formed a controversial but essential part of Britain’s political debate.

With significant additional material, this edition updates the argument and explains the real effects of austerity policies and the recession. And, crucially, it explains what must be done to protect a vital and underestimated national asset – Britain’s newest adults.

Ed Howker is a programme-maker for Channel 4’s Dispatches. Shiv Malik is an investigative journalist at the Guardian. Both live in London.

Imagine That – Music

Imagine That – Music (eBook)

The History of Music Rewritten

Michael Sells

Popular music’s most intriguing stories are the tales of what might have been, those seemingly insignificant incidents that would have had the largest unforeseen effects.

Imagine That…
Elvis is drafted into the army before his first studio session … and quietly lives out his days as a support act

The curse of the ‘27 Club’ is broken … and rock music rehabilitates its fallen stars

MTV flops as music fans side with the radio star … and hip-hop never reaches the mainstream

Engaging, contentious and compulsively readable, each book in this new series takes the reader on a historical flight of fancy, imagining the consequences if history had gone just that little bit differently.

Michael Sells is a historian educated at the University of Chester. Captivated by history from a young age, he is especially interested in Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation and 1960s and 70s football. Outside of history, his passions include dystopian novels, animal sanctuaries and lower-league football. Born in the South East of England, he now lives in Cambridge and the Imagine That titles are his first books.

Tales From the Turf

Tales From the Turf (eBook)

Reflections from a Life in Horseracing

Robin Oakley

Britain and Ireland's Top 100 Racehorses of All Time author Robin Oakley takes us on a canter through the colourful world of horseracing.

Join him as he shares evocative personal stories of being there at racing legends’ key moments, such as Frankie Dettori riding seven winners in a day at Ascot. He debates whether jockeys are sportsmen or masochists – jump jockeys can expect a fall on average every 13 rides – and reminisces about unusual achievements, including trainer Sirrell Griffith’s Cheltenham Gold Cup win after milking his 100 cows that morning.

Tales From the Turf is an extraordinary account from the Spectator’s long-running Turf columnist, and a man for whom horseracing is a lifetime’s passion.

Robin Oakley OBE is a European Political Editor at CNN International and was BBC Political Editor.

A gallop through Oakley's racing life … Tales from the Turf is probably the book Oakley has most enjoyed writing, and it shows. The pace is unrelenting.Racing Post

A Nobel Fellow on Every Floor

A Nobel Fellow on Every Floor (eBook)

A History of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology

John Finch

In Cambridge in the 1950s, several research groups funded by the Medical Research Council were producing exciting results. In the Biochemistry Department, Sanger determined the amino acid sequence of insulin, and was awarded a Nobel Prize for this in 1958. At the Cavendish Laboratory, in the MRC Unit for the Study of the Molecular Structure of Biological Systems, Watson and Crick solved the structure of DNA, and Perutz and Kendrew produced the first three-dimensional maps of protein structures – haemoglobin and myoglobin – for which all four were later awarded Nobel Prizes.

This made it timely to create, in 1962, a new Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge by amalgamating these groups with other MRC-funded groups from London. The Laboratory has become one of the most successful in its field, and the number of Nobel Prizes awarded over the years to scientists at LMB has risen to thirteen.

This book follows the development of LMB, through the people who moved into the new Laboratory and their research. It describes events and personalities that have given the Laboratory a friendly, family atmosphere, while continuing to be scientifically productive.

John Finch joined Rosalind Franklin as a PhD student at Birkbeck College, London in 1955 studying the structure of viruses by X-ray diffraction. He came to the new LMB in 1962 with the Birkbeck group, which was now led by Aaron Klug after Rosalind’s death in 1958. In addition to continuing the work on virus structure, as the group’s interests diversified, he became involved in other research, studying the structures, for example, of transfer RNA and chromatin. He is at present a ‘retired worker’ at LMB.
