Jane Austen, the Secret Radical

Jane Austen, the Secret Radical (Hardback)

Helena Kelly

'A sublime piece of literary detective work that shows us once and for all how to be precisely the sort of reader that Austen deserves.' Caroline Criado-Perez, Guardian

Almost everything we think we know about Jane Austen is wrong. Her novels don't confine themselves to grand houses and they were not written just for readers' enjoyment. She writes about serious subjects and her books are deeply subversive. We just don't read her properly – we haven't been reading her properly for 200 years.

Jane Austen, The Secret Radical puts that right. In her first, brilliantly original book, Austen expert Helena Kelly introduces the reader to a passionate woman living in an age of revolution; to a writer who used what was regarded as the lightest of literary genres, the novel, to grapple with the weightiest of subjects – feminism, slavery, abuse, the treatment of the poor, the power of the Church, even evolution – at a time, and in a place, when to write about such things directly was seen as being akin to treason.

Uncovering a radical, spirited and political engaged Austen, Jane Austen, The Secret Radical will encourage you to read Jane, all over again.

Helena Kelly holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where she has taught classics and English Literature. Brought up in Kent, she now lives in Oxford with her husband and son. She is also the author of Jane Austen, the Secret Radical and The Life and Lies of Charles Dickens.

What this radical re-reading … does so brilliantly is to exhort us all to chuck out the chintz, and the teacups, and all the traditional romantic notions about Austen's work that have been fed to us for so long … However well you think you know the novels, you'll be raring to read them again once you've read this.Caroline SandersonThe Bookseller

Introducing Sociology

Introducing Sociology (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

John Nagle

Piero Pierini

Sociology is interested in the ways people shape the society they live in, and the ways society shapes them. Simply, it is the study of what modern society is and how it functions.

In the series’ inimitable style, Introducing Sociology traces the origins of sociology from industrialization, revolution and the Enlightenment through to globalization, neoliberalism and the fear of nationalism – introducing you to key thinkers, movements and concepts along the way.

You will develop insight into the world around you, as you engage your ‘sociological imagination’ and explore studies of the city, theories of power and knowledge, concepts of national, racial and sexual identity, and much more.

John Nagle is a Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, where he researches conflict and peace processes, multiculturalism and social movements. His work is widely published in the academic and popular press, and he has provided research consultancy for both the media and international public policy bodies.

Piero is an illustrator, artist and graphic designer whose work has been included in the Royal College of Art in London. He has illustrated many Introducing titles.

How to be Cool

How to be Cool (Hardback)

The 150 Essential Idols, Ideals and Other Cool S***

Thomas W Hodgkinson

Cool can’t be taught. That’s the received wisdom, yet this wry, entertaining compendium by Thomas W. Hodgkinson (author of the indispensable How to Sound Cultured) shows that, on the contrary, anyone can increase their cool quotient by learning from the masters and the methods of the past.

It’s never an easy journey. But to set yourself on the path to true cool, you’ll need this invaluable roadmap.

Thomas W. Hodgkinson is the co-author of How to Sound Cultured (Icon, 2015) and author of the novel Memoirs of a Stalker (Silvertail, 2015). He writes regularly for The Spectator and the Daily Mail, and is a contributing editor at The Week. He lives in North London.

This is a cool book. I'm a 69-year-old Republican who lives on a tree farm and drives a station wagon. I know everything about being uncool. And Thomas W. Hodgkinson is cool with that. Read his book and find out how you're a fool to be cool if you can't dare to be square. It's all cool.PJ O'Rourke

The Horologicon

The Horologicon (Paperback)

A Day's Jaunt Through the Lost Words of the English Language

Mark Forsyth

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER THE ETYMOLOGICON.

'Reading The Horologicon in one sitting is very tempting' Roland White, Sunday Times.

Mark Forsyth presents a delightfully eccentric day in the life of unusual, beautiful and forgotten English words.

From uhtceare in the hours before dawn through to dream drumbles at bedtime, The Horologicon gives you the extraordinary lost words you never knew you needed.

Wake up feeling rough? Then you're philogrobolized. Pretending to work? That's fudgelling (which may lead to rizzling if you feel sleepy after lunch). A Radio 4 Book of the Week, The Horologicon is an eye-opening, page-turning celebration of the English language at its most endearingly arcane.

Born in London in 1977, Mark Forsyth (a.k.a The Inky Fool) was given a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary as a christening present and has never looked back. His book The Etymologicon was a Sunday Times No. 1 Bestseller, and his TED Talk 'What's a snollygoster?' has had more than half a million views. He has also written a specially commissioned essay 'The Unknown Unknown: Bookshops and the Delight of Not Getting What You Wanted' for Independent Booksellers Week and the introduction for the new edition of the Collins English Dictionary. He lives in London with his dictionaries, and blogs at blog.inkyfool.com.

Fucking Apostrophes

Fucking Apostrophes (Hardback)

Simon Griffin

'At last, a book that tells you exactly where to stick your apostrophe … funny and useful, the perfect stocking filler.' David Marsh, Guardian

Apostrophes are a pain. The rules about how to use them are complicated, and have evolved haphazardly. Originally written as advice by a copywriter for designers – wont to insert and remove apostrophes at will, for visual effect – this is a light-hearted pocket-sized guide to getting the things right.

Simon Griffin lets off steam so that we don't have to, showing precisely why 'Rhianna and Jennifer's photos were all over the internet' is quite different to 'Rhianna's and Jennifer's photos' or what words apostrophes are replacing in sentences such as 'He'd like you to buy him some cocaine', or 'They've got it all on camera.'

Elegantly produced, this is the perfect gift for any pedant, as well as an indispensable guide in all our moments of grammar-related frustration.

Simon Griffin is the founder of copywriting agency Hyperbolic (www.thisishyperbolic.com) and lives with his wife and two children in Leeds. He currently has no plans to learn how to touch type and can happily write whole paragraphs without realising he’s left caps lock on.

The Etymologicon

The Etymologicon (Paperback)

A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language

Mark Forsyth

THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER

'Witty and erudite … stuffed with the kind of arcane information that nobody strictly needs to know, but which is a pleasure to learn nonetheless.' Nick Duerden, Independent.

'Particularly good … Forsyth takes words and draws us into their, and our, murky history.' William Leith, Evening Standard.

The Etymologicon is an occasionally ribald, frequently witty and unerringly erudite guided tour of the secret labyrinth that lurks beneath the English language.

What is the actual connection between disgruntled and gruntled? What links church organs to organised crime, California to the Caliphate, or brackets to codpieces?

Mark Forsyth's riotous celebration of the idiosyncratic and sometimes absurd connections between words is a classic of its kind: a mine of fascinating information and a must-read for word-lovers everywhere.

'Highly recommended' Spectator

Mark Forsyth is a writer, journalist and blogger. His book The Etymologicon was a Sunday Times Number One Bestseller and his TED Talk 'What's a snollygoster?' has had more than half a million views. The Elements of Eloquence

The Elements of Eloquence (Paperback)

How To Turn the Perfect English Phrase

Mark Forsyth

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER THE ETYMOLOGICON.

'An informative but highly entertaining journey through the figures of rhetoric … Mark Forsyth wears his considerable knowledge lightly. He also writes beautifully.' David Marsh, Guardian.

Mark Forsyth presents the secret of writing unforgettable phrases, uncovering the techniques that have made immortal such lines as 'To be or not to be' and 'Bond. James Bond.'

In his inimitably entertaining and witty style, he takes apart famous quotations and shows how you too can write like Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde or John Lennon.

Crammed with tricks to make the most humdrum sentiments seem poetic or wise, The Elements of Eloquence reveals how writers through the ages have turned humble words into literary gold – and how you can do the same.

Mark Forsyth is a blogger and author who was given a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary as a christening present and has never looked back. In 2009, he started the Inky Fool blog in order to share his heaps of useless information with a verbose world. His books have made him one of the UK's best-known commentators on words. Jon Sutherland

John Crace

Did Charlotte Brontë take opium? Did the Reverend Brontë carry a loaded pistol? What, precisely, does ‘wuthering’ mean?

Distinguished literary critic John Sutherland takes an idiosyncratic look at the world of the Brontës, from the bumps on Charlotte’s head to the nefarious origins of Mr Rochester’s fortune, by way of astral telephony, letterwriting dogs, an exploding peat bog, and much, much more.

John Sutherland is Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus at University College London and an eminent scholar in the field of Victorian fiction, author of many works including The Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction. A Secret Life of London’s Waterways

Helen Babbs

Journeying along London’s waterways on a canal boat called Pike, Helen Babbs puts down roots for two weeks at a time before moving on. From Walthamstow Marsh in the east to Uxbridge in the west, she explores the landscape in all its guises: marshland, wasteland, city centre and suburb.

From deep winter to late autumn, Babbs explores the people, politics, history and wildlife of the canals and rivers, to reveal an intimate and unusual portrait of London – and of life.

Helen Babbs is a writer and journalist. Her work has been published by the BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, New Statesman and Time Out, among others. Helen's first book – My Garden, the City and Me, about urban nature and the glory of growing things – was published in 2011 and nominated for two garden writing awards.

Adrift is an engaging introduction to living on a narrow boat, held together with atmospheric descriptions of reconnecting with life's simple pleasures … It is at its best when capturing the transition from a life on land to a life on board, as well as mapping the evolving relationship between urban building developments and the canal's ecology.Times Literary Supplement

Ride! Ride! Ride!

Ride! Ride! Ride! - cover coming soon

Ride! Ride! Ride! (Paperback)

Herne Hill Velodrome and the Story of British Track Cycling

Mark Wellings

Graeme Obree

The early 21st century has been a golden age for British track cycling, with world championship glory for the likes of Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton, and Olympic medals galore.

Tracing the origins of this phenomenal success story, Mark Wellings delves into cycling’s chaotic and colourful past to chronicle the rise of the sport through the story of Herne Hill Velodrome, the iconic south London venue.

125 years on from the inaugural race, Herne Hill has played host to many of the most significant moments in British cycling history, from the first Good Friday Meeting in 1903 to the 1948 London Olympics and later the first track rides of a twelveyear- old Wiggins. Writer and historian Wellings, a Herne Hill regular with rare behind-the-scenes access, brings these events vividly to life, while also exploring the lives of those involved, such as ‘Champion of Champions’ Fausto Coppi, the legendary rivals Tommy Godwin and Reg Harris, the tragic figure of Tom Simpson and the fascinating Graeme Obree.

Drawing on exclusive interviews with key figures and featuring many previously unpublished photographs, Ride! Ride! Ride! is a thrilling circuit of track cycling’s history, the story of a unique venue, and a tale of British achievement against all the odds.

Mark Wellings is a publisher, writer and historian. Born and raised in north-west England, he spent a decade living and working abroad before settling with his family in south-east London – a short ride from Herne Hill Velodrome. A lifelong cyclist, he fell in love with the track the first time he took his young son there and has not looked back: he is now a regular volunteer, spectator and occasional participant. He loves taking his Italian road bikes on iconic rides around Europe, but is usually to be found at the back of the pack on Sunday rides with VC Londres. A risible wheel-sucker, he still dreams of having a double-jump like Reg Harris.

The Persuaders

The Persuaders (Paperback)

The hidden industry that wants to change your mind

James Garvey

'A work of engaging pop philosophy and accessible social science [and] a boisterous dissection of the forces jellifying our minds' Sunday Times

Includes brand new material covering the US election and Brexit

Every day, many people will try to change your mind, but they won’t reason with you. Instead, you’ll be nudged, anchored, incentivised and manipulated in barely noticeable ways. It’s a profound shift in the way we interact with one another.

Philosopher James Garvey explores the hidden story of persuasion and the men and women in the business of changing our minds. From the covert PR used to start the first Gulf War to the neuromarketing of products to appeal to our unconscious minds, he reveals the dark arts practised by professional persuaders.

How did we end up with a world where beliefs are mass-produced by lobbyists and PR firms? Could Google or Facebook swing elections? Are new kinds of persuasion making us less likely to live happy, decent lives in an open, peaceful world?
Is it too late, or can we learn to listen to reason again? The Persuaders is a call to think again about how we think now.

James Garvey works for the Royal Institute of Philosophy and edits The Philosophers’ Magazine. He is the author of a number of books, including The Story of Philosophy (with Jeremy Stangroom) and The Ethics of Climate Change. He has written for the Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement, the Huffington Post, the New Statesman, and the Times Higher Education Supplement, does voluntary work for Thames Reach and Crisis, teaches jiu jitsu, and is an enthusiastic cyclist. James was born in California, grew up in West Virginia and he now lives on a canal boat in London, UK.

‘The author worries, rightly, that in losing the ability to argue and question intelligently we become more susceptible to the subtle and unseen skills of powerful persuaders.’Financial Times

Messi vs. Ronaldo – 2017 Updated Edition

Messi vs. Ronaldo – 2017 Updated Edition (Paperback)

The Greatest Rivalry

Luca Caioli

In 2009 Real Madrid paid £80m, a then record fee, to sign a ready-made superstar in an effort to keep pace with a Barcelona side that had won it all. In doing so, they sparked a rivalry like no other; Messi vs Ronaldo.

The seasons that have followed have been truly spectacular, the battle for supremacy increasing in profile and intensity all the while. Their styles, personalities and footballing allegiances continue to divide opinion, but their dominance of the record books has now put one claim beyond debate – this is football's greatest ever head-to-head.

Acclaimed football writer Luca Caioli draws on invaluable testimonies from those closest to the two stars, with exclusive insights from friends, families, teammates and managers, to tell the inside story of this fascinating rivalry.

Luca Caioli is the bestselling author of biographies of Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar. A renowned Italian sports journalist, he lives in Spain corresponding for SKY Italia and Corriere della Sera.

Yours Always

Yours Always (Hardback)

Letters of Longing

Eleanor Bass

Love letters are potent. They breathe. They speak. They can arouse, comfort, captivate. They can also cut deep.

The powerful, deeply personal letters collected here reveal the painful underside of love. Witness Winston Churchill 'growl with anger to be treated with benevolent indifference' and Edith Piaf reel in the throes of a 'terrible' passion.

Through the letters of literary icons Charlotte Brontë, Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolf, Hollywood stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and statesmen Henry VIII and Franklin D. Roosevelt, Yours Always offers an unusually intimate insight into the lives of such illustrious figures.

Love is revealed here in its many shades of disharmony and confusion: unrequited, uncertain, imbalanced, unconventional, thwarted, failed and forbidden. Love is not always rose-tinted, and Yours Always illuminates the sorrows that can accompany falling in, falling out, and staying in love.

Includes letter to and from: Charlotte Brontë, Richard Burton, Lord Byron, Winston Churchill, Marie Curie, Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Henry VIII, Ted Hughes, Graham Greene, Franz Kafka, Marilyn Monroe, Iris Murdoch, Edith Piaf, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Elizabeth Taylor, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, W.B. Yeats

Eleanor Bass is a freelance researcher and writer. Having previously read Theology at the University of Cambridge, she obtained her doctorate in English Literature from King’s College London in 2015. Her academic interests include life writing, letter writing, and the writing of wartime. Eleanor lives in South-East London with her husband and daughter.

A Practical Guide to Sex

A Practical Guide to Sex (eBook)

Finally, Helpful Sex Advice!

Dr Meg-John Barker

Justin Hancock Meg-John Barker

Plenty of books on sex suggest that it has to be done in a certain way, or in a certain kind of relationship, or with certain people. This isn’t that kind of book.

Enjoy Sex is a truly practical, friendly guide through the confusing, and sometimes alarming, world of sex and sexuality. Its radical approach puts your experience at the heart of the book, and invites you to explore what might be enjoyable to you.

With the authors’ engaging and thoughtful style, the book challenges the messages we receive about ‘normal’ sex, looks at how to understand and care for yourself, delves into ideas of pleasure for different bodies, ages and tastes, explores relationships, and tackles the tricky topics of communication and consent.

So, throw out the rule book and learn to listen to your own desires. This may just be the most helpful book about sex ever.
