Voices From the Past

Voices From the Past (Paperback)

A year of great quotations – and the stories from history that inspired them

W.B. Marsh

366 quotations – one for every day of the (leap) year – each with a fascinating historical story

In a treasure trove for history buffs, W. B. Marsh fleshes out the context behind famous quotations associated with each day of the year, sending us back and forth in history from the time of the Ancient Egyptians to the world we live in today.

'You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war.' (25 April 1898) Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst urges war artist Frederick Remington to stay in Cuba while Hearst publishes lurid tales of an imaginary conflict.

'I am tasting the stars!' (4 August 1693) The monk Dom Pérignon tests the result of his new techniques in the making of sparkling wine, and champagne is born.

'I did not write it. God wrote it. I merely did his dictation.' (20 March 1852) Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin, the nineteenth century's bestseller apart from the Bible.

'From the sublime to the ridiculous is only a step.' (18 October 1812) Napoleon's all-conquering Grande Armée begins its slow and ignominious retreat from Moscow.

W.B. Marsh spent two years as an officer in the US Marine Corps, followed by a career in international advertising. Voices from the Past is his fourth book, after 365, 366 and Tales of War, all of which were written with Bruce Carrick, who died in 2018.

Rewilding – The Illustrated Edition (Hardback)

The Radical New Science of Ecological Recovery

Cain Blythe

Paul Jepson

'A dazzling illustrated edition of a 'hugely useful and fascinating resumé of rewilding' Isabella Tree, author of Wilding

'Compelling … succinct and objective' Financial Times

Rewilding reveals the ways in which ecologists are restoring the lost interactions between animals, plants, and natural disturbances that are the essence of thriving ecosystems. It looks into a past in which industrialization and globalization have downgraded our grasslands; at present projects restoring plants and animals to their natural, untamed state; and into the future, with ten predictions for a rewilded planet.

This illustrated edition combines beautiful natural history images with infographic flow-charts depicting the 'trophic cascades' of biodiverse ecosystems, to explore a brave new world repopulated with wild horses and cattle, beavers, rhinos, and wolves.

'A masterly job, explaining the science behind rewilding in an accessible, honest and compelling way. It deserves to be widely read and become a book of great influence.' Isabella Tree, author of Wilding.

Paul Jepson was until recently a director of Oxford University's MSc course in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management, and is a regular contributor to TV and radio.

Cain Blythe specialises in habitat restoration, nature recovery and the use of technology in conservation.

'A reminder of all the angst, the strangeness, the minor griefs, but – most importantly – of the magic' – Jennie Agg

A moving, funny exploration of life as the parent of a lockdown baby, by illustrator Pia Bramley.

Since March 2020, babies have been born into a world of masks, hand washing and social distancing. They met their grandparents on video calls. Their parents held them up to windows and took them for long walks in the rain.

Pia Bramley's illustrations capture the intimacy of the small, strange world of the pandemic baby. She draws on her own experience as a new parent, telling the story of a child's first year against the backdrop of the pandemic: the quiet streets of the first lockdown, the relative freedom of summer, the long nights of autumn and winter and, finally, new hope as spring arrives and life begins to open up again. Moving, funny and deeply honest, this is a book for every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend who waited to hold their pandemic baby.

Pia Bramley studied at the Royal Drawing School and the University of Brighton. Pandemic Baby is her first book.

The Illustrated Etymologicon

The Illustrated Etymologicon (Hardback)

A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language

Mark Forsyth

A NEW, BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED HARDBACK EDITION OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER, PUBLISHED ON ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY.

'Witty and erudite … stuffed with the kind of arcane information that nobody strictly needs to know, but which is a pleasure to learn nonetheless.' Nick Duerden, Independent.

'Particularly good … Forsyth takes words and draws us into their, and our, murky history.' William Leith, Evening Standard.

The Etymologicon is an occasionally ribald, frequently witty and unerringly erudite guided tour of the secret labyrinth that lurks beneath the English language.

What is the actual connection between disgruntled and gruntled? What links church organs to organised crime, California to the Caliphate, or brackets to codpieces?

Mark Forsyth's riotous celebration of the idiosyncratic and sometimes absurd connections between words is a classic of its kind: a mine of fascinating information and a must-read for word-lovers everywhere.

'Highly recommended' Spectator

Mark Forsyth is a writer, journalist and blogger. His book The Etymologicon was a Sunday Times Number One Bestseller and his TED Talk 'What's a snollygoster?' has had more than half a million views. He is also the author of The Horologicon and The Elements of Eloquence, and wrote a specially commissioned essay The Unknown Unknown for Independent Booksellers Week. He lives in London with his dictionaries, and blogs at blog.inkyfool.com.

Come Fly the World

Come Fly the World (Paperback)

The Women of Pan Am at War and Peace

Julia Cooke

At a time when that 1960s notion of air travel as decadent and exceptional is experiencing an unexpected revival, this book … could be the G&T in a plastic glass you need.' The Spectator

Travel writer Julia Cooke's exhilarating portrait of Pan Am stewardesses in the Mad Men era.

Come Fly the World tells the story of the stewardesses who served on the iconic Pan American Airways between 1966 and 1975 – and of the unseen diplomatic role they played on the world stage.

Alongside the glamour was real danger, as they flew soldiers to and from Vietnam and staffed Operation Babylift – the dramatic evacuation of 2,000 children during the fall of Saigon. Cooke's storytelling weaves together the true stories of women like Lynne Totten, a science major who decided life in a lab was not for her, to Hazel Bowie, one of the relatively few African American stewardesses of the era, as they embraced the liberation of a jet-set life.

In the process, Cooke shows how the sexualized coffee-tea-or-me stereotype was at odds with the importance of what they did, and with the freedom, power and sisterhood they achieved.

Julia Cooke is a journalist, travel writer and contributing editor at Virginia Quarterly Review. Her work has featured in Time, Condé Nast Traveller, Salon and Best Women's Travel Writing (Vol. 9), among many others, and she has taught writing at The New School and Columbia University. Her first book, The Other Side of Paradise (Seal Press) profiled young Cubans in post-Fidel Havana. Cooke's writing shows a persistent interest in how people-and women, in particular-negotiate individual desires and ambitions within the culture, history, and politics of wherever they call home. She lives in Vermont.

Julia Cooke’s entertaining, sexism-skewering history shows how female flight attendants were also flag-flying diplomats'Financial Times
Cooke is good on the way an industry with rigid, deep-rooted notions about female service, looks and behaviour became a ticket to unparalleled independence … At a time when that 1960s notion of air travel as decadent and exceptional is experiencing an unexpected revival, this book … could be the G&T in a plastic glass you need.’The Spectator

Black Lion

Black Lion (Hardback)

Alive in the Wilderness

Bridget Pitt

Sicelo Mbatha

Wilderness guide Sicelo Mbatha shares lessons learnt from a lifetime's intimate association with Africa's wildest nature.

Black Lion begins in rural South Africa where a deeply traumatic childhood experience – a cousin being dragged away by a crocodile – should have turned him against the surrounding wilderness. Instead, he was irresistibly drawn to it. As a volunteer at Imfolozi Nature Reserve, close encounters with animals taught him to 'see' with his heart and thus began a spiritual awakening.

Drawing from his Zulu culture and a yearning to better understand human's relationship to nature, Sicelo has forged a new path to nature with an immersive, respectful and transformative way of being in the wilderness. As humanity hurtles into the anthropogenic 21st century, Black Lion is an urgent reminder of how much we need wilderness for our emotional and spiritual survival.

'A brave account of a natural disaster, and of achieving reconciliation with the predatoriness of life.' Richard Mabey on Mbatha's essay, Letting Go.

SICELO MBATHA is a facilitator of spiritual experiences of the wilderness. He has devoted his life to fostering deep connections between humans and nature, and in enabling members of his own community to experience the wilderness. He grew up alongside the Huhluwe/Imfolozi nature reserve in South Africa, and nature has always been his medicine, his teacher and his spiritual home.

Black Lion is a powerful, propulsive and unflinchingly honest account of one man's remarkable spiritual journey. It is life-affirming and deepening, and a vital contribution to the discourse around conservation. A must-read.

The Babel Message

The Babel Message (Hardback)

A Love Letter to Language

Keith Kahn-Harris

'Quite simply, and quite ridiculously, one of the funniest and most illuminating books I have ever read. I thought I was obsessive, but Keith Kahn-Harris is playing a very different sport. He really has discovered the whole world in an egg.' Simon Garfield

'There is a delicious humour implicit in every page . . . [the book] is filled with a sense of wonder, gazing at languages that neither the writer nor reader understands . . . The Babel Message was such fun that I even went out and bought a Kinder Surprise Egg.' – Mark Forsyth, The Spectator

A thrilling journey deep into the heart of language, from a rather unexpected starting point.

Keith Kahn-Harris is a man obsessed with something seemingly trivial – the warning message found inside Kinder Surprise eggs:

WARNING, read and keep: Toy not suitable for children under 3 years. Small parts might be swallowed or inhaled.

On a tiny sheet of paper, this message is translated into dozens of languages – the world boiled down to a multilingual essence. Inspired by this, the author asks: what makes 'a language'? With the help of the international community of language geeks, he shows us what the message looks like in Ancient Sumerian, Zulu, Cornish, Klingon – and many more. Along the way he considers why Hungarian writing looks angry, how to make up your own language, and the meaning of the heavy metal umlaut.

Overturning the Babel myth, he argues that the messy diversity of language shouldn't be a source of conflict, but of collective wonder. This is a book about hope, a love letter to language.

'This is a wonderful book. A treasure trove of mind-expanding insights into language and humanity encased in a deliciously quirky, quixotic quest. I loved it. Warning: this will keep you reading.' – Ann Morgan, author of Reading the World: Confessions of a Literary Explorer

DR KEITH KAHN-HARRIS is a sociologist and author, based in London. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Jewish Policy Research and a Senior Lecturer at Leo Baeck College. He also makes time for pursuing other interests outside the community, including extreme metal music and the warning messages in Kinder Surprise Eggs.

Astroquizzical – The Illustrated Edition

Astroquizzical – The Illustrated Edition (Hardback)

Solving the Cosmic Puzzles of our Planets, Stars, and Galaxies

Jillian Scudder

A beautifully illustrated, enlightening edition of astronomer Jillan Scudder’s exploration of our universe.

Looking up at the night sky, it is almost impossible to imagine that we can trace our common ancestry with the distant stars and galaxies back over 13.8 billion years.

Astroquizzical explores this connection by travelling back through the generations of the cosmic family tree, from Earth (parent) to the stars (grandparents), galaxies (great grandparents) and first atoms of the Big Bang (great-great grandparents). On the journey, the reader is invited to become ‘astroquizzical’ by asking the questions and investigating the many scientific mysteries of how the universe was formed and how it works.

This updated and illustrated edition combines beautifully curated space images with ten sketchbook ‘thought experiments’ to create a uniquely accessible guide to the science of Earth’s place among the planets, stars, and galaxies.

Jillian Scudder is an astrophysicist and Assistant Professor of Physics at Oberlin College, Ohio. She hosts and writes the popular Astroquizzical blog, in which she tackles some of the mysteries of the universe by answering space-related questions from the public. Her writing has been published in Forbes, Quartz, Medium, and The Conversation.

Who Poisoned Your Bacon?

Who Poisoned Your Bacon? (Paperback)

The Dangerous History of Meat Additives

Guillaume Coudray

Bee Wilson

'Highly persuasive … a well-organised and solid dossier that alerts us to legalised chemical trickery.'Joanna Blythman, The Spectator

'A bombshell book' Daily Mail

'Eye-opening and important . . . a book full of righteous anger' Bee Wilson, from her Foreword

Did you know that bacon, ham, hot dogs and salami are classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 'category 1 carcinogens'?

Would you eat them if you knew they caused bowel cancer?

Following ten years of detailed investigation, documentary film-maker Guillaume Coudray presents a powerful examination of the use of nitro-additives in meat. As he reveals, most mass-produced processed meats, and now even many 'artisanal' products, contain chemicals that react with meat to form cancer-causing compounds. He tells the full story of how, since the 1970s, the meat-processing industry has denied the health risks because these additives make curing cheaper and quicker, extending shelf life and giving meat a pleasing pink colour.

These additives are, in fact, unnecessary. Parma ham has not contained them for nearly 30 years – and indeed all traditional cured meats were once produced without nitrate and nitrite. Progressive producers are now increasingly following that example.?

Who Poisoned Your Bacon? – featuring a foreword by acclaimed food writer Bee Wilson – is the authoritative, gripping and scandalous story of big business flying in the face of scientific health warnings. It allows you to evaluate the risks, and carries a message of hope that things can change.

Guillaume Coudray is a French director and producer of documentary films. A political scientist by training, he is a graduate of Sciences Po and a former research grantee at the National Foundation for Political Science. His decade-long investigation into meat-processing has led to widespread press coverage and a hard-hitting film documentary broadcast in more than fifteen countries, which has had a major impact on the meat-processing industry. He lives in Paris. Follow him on twitter at @g_coudray

Beyond Bitcoin

Beyond Bitcoin (Paperback)

Decentralised Finance and the End of Banks

Simon Dingle

Steven Boykey Sidley

After over a decade of Bitcoin, which has now moved beyond lore and hype into an increasingly robust star in the firmament of global assets, a new and more important question has arisen. What happens beyond Bitcoin? The answer is decentralised finance – 'DeFi'.

Tech and finance experts Steven Boykey Sidley and Simon Dingle argue that DeFi – which enables all manner of financial transactions to take place directly, person to person, without the involvement of financial institutions – will redesign the cogs and wheels in the engines of trust, and make the remarkable rise of Bitcoin look quaint by comparison. It will disrupt and displace fine and respectable companies, if not entire industries.

Sidley and Dingle explain how DeFi works, introduce the organisations and individuals that comprise the new industry, and identify the likely winners and losers in the coming revolution.

STEVEN BOYKEY SIDLEY has worked extensively in technology and finance and is an award-winning novelist, playwright and columnist. An American citizen, he currently lives in Johannesburg with his wife and their two children.

SIMON DINGLE is an author, broadcaster and entrepreneur with extensive experience in cryptocurrency, including being on the founding teams of several fintech firms, including cryptocurrency exchange Luno and open banking provider Curve.

Seven Pillars of Science

Seven Pillars of Science (Paperback)

The Incredible Lightness of Ice, and Other Scientific Surprises

John Gribbin

John Gribbin, author of Six Impossible Things, shortlisted for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize, presents a tour of seven fundamental scientific truths that underpin our very existence.

These 'pillars of science' also defy common sense. For example, solid things are mostly empty space, so how do they hold together? There appears to be no special 'life force', so how do we distinguish living things from inanimate objects? And why does ice float on water, when most solids don't? You might think that question hardly needs asking, and yet if ice didn't float, life on Earth would never have happened.

The answers to all of these questions were sensational in their day, and some still are. Throughout history, science has been able to think the unthinkable – and Gribbin brilliantly shows the surprising secrets on which our understanding of life is based.

John Gribbin's numerous bestselling books include In Search of Schrödinger's Cat and Six Impossible Things, which was shortlisted for the 2019 Royal Society Science Book Prize. He has been described as 'one of the finest and most prolific writers of popular science around' by the Spectator. In 2021, he was made Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Astronomy at the University of Sussex.

[In] the last couple of years we have seen a string of books that pack bags of science in a digestible form into a small space. John Gribbin has already proved himself a master of this approach with his Six Impossible Things, and he's done it again … [Seven Pillars of Science is] light, to the point and hugely informative. … It packs in the science, tells an intriguing story and is beautifully packaged.Brian Clegg, popularscience.co.uk

'[Gribbin] deftly joins the dots to reveal a bigger picture that is even more awe-inspiring than the sum of its parts.'

Let’s Get Physical (Hardback)

How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World

Danielle Friedman

A NEW YORKER BEST BOOK OF 2022

'Well-researched and readable' – Financial Times

'An absorbing, pacy read' – New Statesman
'The story of lycra-clad feminism' Stylist
'Canny and informative' – The New Yorker

The untold history of women's exercise culture, from jogging and Jazzercise to Jane Fonda.

Author of The Cut's viral article shared thousands of times unearthing the little-known origins of barre workouts, Danielle Friedman explores the history of women's exercise, and how physical strength has been converted into other forms of power.

Only in the 60s, thanks to a few forward-thinking fitness pioneers, did women begin to move en masse. In doing so, they were pursuing not only physical strength, but personal autonomy.

Exploring barre, jogging, aerobics, weight training and yoga, Danielle Friedman tells the story of how, with the rise of late-20th century feminism, women discovered the joy of physical competence – and how, going forward, we can work to transform fitness from a privilege into a right.

Danielle Friedman is an award-winning journalist whose writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine's The Cut, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, Health, and other publications. She has worked as a senior editor at NBC News Digital and The Daily Beast, and she began her career as a nonfiction book editor at the Penguin imprints Hudson Street Press and Plume. She lives in New York City with her husband and son.

A well-researched and readable account of how female pioneers broke the taboos that stopped most women exercising until at least the 1960s. Friedman, a journalist, emphasises that fitness has remained accessible primarily to white women with time and resources. Now some pioneers are trying to break those exclusionary barriers too.Financial Times, best summer books of 2022
An absorbing, pacy read – and her enthusiasm for exercise is contagious.New Statesman
Fact-packed but bouncy … Most enjoyable is when Friedman shines light on less hallowed figures, like Judi Sheppard Missett, the relentlessly upbeat founder of Jazzercise, whose classes "changed the rhythm of women's days"; and Bonnie Prudden, "the lady in the leotite" and a descendant of Davy Crockett…[Friedman's] book is very much "pro" exercise, but for the right reasons: not slimming down but mood management, community, spirituality in the corporal. The New York Times
Astute and entertaining … With an emphasis on barrier breakers, business dynamos, and exceptional athletes, Friedman explores how physical training can be a means of personal liberation … This zippy history is bursting with energy.Publishers Weekly

Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid

Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid (Hardback)

How the Natural World is Adapting to Climate Change

Thor Hanson

'An original, wide-ranging and carefully researched book … contains important lessons for humanity.' Mark Cocker, The Spectator

A fascinating insight into climate change biology around the globe, as well as in our own backyards.

Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid is the first major book by a biologist to focus on the fascinating story of how the natural world is adjusting, adapting, and sometimes measurably evolving in response to climate change. Lyrical and thought-provoking, this book broadens the climate focus from humans to the wider lattice of life.

Bestselling nature writer Thor Hanson – author of Buzz (a Radio 4 'Book of the Week') – shows us how Caribbean lizards have grown larger toe pads to grip trees more tightly during frequent hurricanes; and how the 'plasticity' of squid has allowed them to change their body size and breeding habits to cope with altered sea temperatures.

Plants and animals have a great deal to teach us about the nature of what comes next, because for many of them, and also for many of us, that world is already here.

Thor Hanson is a biologist whose previous books include The Impenetrable Forest, Feathers (longlisted for the Samuel Johnson prize), The Triumph of Seeds, Buzz, and Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid. He has appeared on BBC Radio 4 and contributed to publications including BBC Wildlife and the Huffington Post. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, USA.

While humans wrestle with net zero targets and greenwashing, other species have had to adapt to the impacts of climate change, as American biologist, Thor Hanson, reveals in this carefully researched book. [Hanson is] an ideal guide to a topic that might otherwise send readers down a well of despair. … The challenge feels overwhelming, and as a single concerned citizen, much feels out of my hands. The Black Joke

The Black Joke (Hardback)

The True Story of One British Ship's Battle Against the Slave Trade

A. E. Rooks

**Longlisted for the Mountbatten Maritime Media Awards 2022**

A groundbreaking history of the Black Joke, the most famous member of the British Royal Navy's anti-slavery squadron, and the long fight to end the transatlantic slave trade.

Initially a slaving vessel itself, the Black Joke was captured in 1827 and repurposed by the Royal Navy to catch its former compatriots. Over the next five years, the vessel liberated more enslaved people than any other in Britain's West Africa Squadron.

As Britain attempted to snuff out the transatlantic slave trade by way of treaty and negotiation, enforcing these policies fell to ships such as the Black Joke as they battled slavers, weather disasters, and interpersonal drama among captains and crew that reverberated across oceans.

The Black Joke is a crucial and deeply compelling work of history, both as a reckoning with slavery and abolition and as a lesson about the power of political will – or the lack thereof.

A.E. Rooks is a two-time Jeopardy! champion with degrees in theatre, law, library and information science, and forthcoming degrees in education and sexuality. Their intellectual passions are united by what the past can teach us about the present, how history shapes our future, and above all, really interesting stories. They are based in Denver, Colorado.

An accessible history … Rooks succeeds in capturing the human dimensions of the story. This is an enlightening take on a lesser-known aspect of the fight to end slavery.Publishers Weekly
A tale skillfully teased out of the vaults and made vivid by an artful narrative.Kirkus

Dear Bill Bryson

Dear Bill Bryson (Paperback)

Footnotes from a Small Island

Ben Aitken

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE ACCLAIMED THE GRAN TOUR AND THE MARMALADE DIARIES

An irreverent homage to the '95 travel classic.

'It would be wrong to view this book as just a highly accomplished homage to a personal hero. Aitken's politics, as much as his humour, are firmly in the spotlight, and Dear Bill Bryson achieves more than its title (possibly even its author) intended.' Manchester Review

In 2013, travel writer Ben Aitken decided to follow in the footsteps of his hero – literally – and started a journey around the UK, tracing the trip taken by Bill Bryson in his classic tribute to the British Isles, Notes from a Small Island.

Staying at the same hotels, ordering the same food, and even spending the same amount of time in the bath, Aitken's homage – updated and with a new preface for 2022 – is filled with wit, insight and humour.

Ben Aitken was born under Thatcher, grew to 6ft then stopped, and is an Aquarius. He was conceived by a nurse and a shipwright, grew up in Portsmouth and was in a boyband for a spell in the noughties, then worked as a carer throughout his twenties. He is the author of six books: Dear Bill Bryson, A Chip Shop in Poznan (a Times bestseller), The Gran Tour ('Both moving and hilarious', Spectator), The Marmalade Diaries, Here Comes the Fun and Shitty Breaks. He writes for The Guardian and The Times, was the TCG Travel Journalist of the Year in 2024, and is an occasional lecturer at the University of Portsmouth.

Money, Magic, and How to Dismantle a Financial Bomb

Money, Magic, and How to Dismantle a Financial Bomb (Hardback)

Quantum Economics for the Real World

David Orrell

Money has many apparently magical properties. It can be created out of the void – and vanish without so much as a puff of smoke. It can flash through space. It can grow without limit. And it can blow up without warning.

David Orrell argues that the emerging discipline of quantum economics, of which he is at the forefront, is the key to shattering the illusions that prevent us from understanding money's true nature.

In this colourful tour of the history, philosophy and mathematics of money, Orrell demonstrates how everything makes much more sense when we replace our classical economic models with ones based on quantum probability – and reveals the explosive reality of what is left once the illusions are stripped away.

DAVID ORRELL is a scientist and writer of books on science and economics. His books include Economyths: 11 Ways Economics Gets It Wrong and Quantum Economics: The New Science of Money, plus Behavioural Economics in the Hot Science series. He lives in Toronto.

'Orrell argues that modelling markets with the mathematical toolbox of quantum mechanics could lead to a better understanding of them … Such ideas may still sound abstract. But they will soon be physically embodied on trading floors … One way or another, finance will catch up.'

The Economist

David is our go-to source for anything and everything about quantum finance and economics. He's at the forefront of the subject and, what's more, he can explain it well.Paul Wilmott, Editor-in-Chief, WILMOTT Magazine

** One of Refinery29's Essential Books For Surviving 2022 **

How to spot greenwashing, stop consuming and demand a more sustainable future.

Climate change is now a mainstream conversation topic, and yet every week our recycling piles are still overflowing and we're faced with a steady stream of brands trying to persuade us to buy their eco-friendly products in our quest to live sustainably.

For too long, corporations have shifted the eco-responsibility onto us, the consumers. It's time to push back and demand change.

In Buy Better, Consume Less, #EthicalHour founder Sian Conway-Wood provides practical tips on how to stop consuming, advice on how to see through corporations' greenwashing, and steps to hold them accountable. In doing so we can create demand for sustainability in supply chains, and put pressure on decision makers to implement systemic change that puts people and planet above profit.

Sian Conway-Wood is a prominent voice on climate change and ethical living. Green and Eco Influencer of the Year 2018, she founded #EthicalHour – the world's first and largest online support network for people who want to live and work more ethically. She lives in Worcestershire.

The Year of the End

The Year of the End (Paperback)

A Memoir of Marriage, Truth and Fiction

Anne Theroux

'A moving and absorbing account' Adam Buxton

'Scorching … a brave book' Helen Brown, Telegraph

'A wise and vivid memoir of a disintegrating marriage and a study of the role of the spouse in the life of a literary giant' Fiona Sturges, i Paper

18TH JANUARY 1990

Paul left today at 8am.

We had been married just over 22 years. The previous evening we had gone out to eat at a local restaurant, where we drank champagne and reminisced. In a short story which he wrote about that final evening of a marriage, the central characters talk wittily and poignantly about the explorer Sir Richard Burton and the sad, misunderstood wife who burnt his books.

The reality was different.

'This memoir is based on the diary I kept during 1990, the year that my first marriage came to an end.'

After 22 years, spent across four continents, with two children – Louis and Marcel – in 1990 Anne and Paul Theroux decided to separate. For that year, Anne – later a professional relationship therapist herself – kept a diary, noting not only her day-to-day experiences as a busy freelance journalist and broadcaster, but the contrasts in her feelings between despairing grief and hope for a new future.

With reflections on truth and fiction, literature and art, and the nature of marriage, alongside commentary on notable political and cultural events, and interviews with prominent writers of the time, including Kingsley Amis and Barbara Cartland, The Year of the End offers a unique insight into the unravelling of a relationship and the attempt to rebuild a life.

Anne Theroux has spent much of her life as a journalist and broadcaster, predominantly at the BBC World Service, where among other things she was Head of Features and Arts for six years. From 1992 to 2016 she trained and worked as a relationship therapist.
