The One (Paperback)

How an Ancient Idea Holds the Future of Physics

Heinrich Päs

In The One, particle physicist Heinrich Päs presents a bold idea: fundamentally, everything in the universe is an aspect of one unified whole.

This idea, called monism, has a rich 3,000-year history: Plato believed that 'all is one', but monism was later rejected as irrational and suppressed as a heresy by the medieval Church. Nevertheless, monism persisted, inspiring Enlightenment science and Romantic poetry.

Päs shows how monism could inspire physics today, how it could slice through the intellectual stagnation that has bogged down progress in modern physics and help science achieve the 'grand theory of everything' that it has been chasing for decades.

Blending physics, philosophy, and the history of ideas, The One is an epic, mind-expanding journey through millennia of human thought and into the nature of reality itself.

Heinrich Päs is a professor of theoretical physics at TU Dortmund University in Germany. He has held positions at Vanderbilt University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Hawai'i and has conducted research visits at CERN and Fermilab. He lives in Bremen, Germany.

[A] heady mix of history, philosophy and cutting-edge theory that is fascinating, provocative … stimulating and engrossing.Wall Street Journal
The history is thoroughly researched, the physics is cutting edge and Päs's larger point resonates: much, or maybe all, of what we take for reality is an artifact of our limited perspectives.Scientific American
"It has always been the dream of philosophers to have all matter built up from one fundamental type of particle," said Paul Dirac in 1930. With expert guidance from Heinrich Päs, in The One we glimpse the scale and grandeur of the dream in one of its modern forms: everything is quantum information.Jim Baggott, author of Atomic and Quantum Reality
Usually we say the universe is made of particles, but Päs shows how quantum physics inverts that. The whole comes first, not the parts – the parts come from fragmenting the whole. I'll never see reality the same way again!George Musser, author of Spooky Action at a Distance
Are we one with the universe? It is a question as old as mankind … But Päs is ready for the challenge and delivers an original and fresh account of both the history and the science of monism. An enticing read for those who seek to understand their place in nature – and who does not?Sabine Hossenfelder, physicist and author of Existential Physics

Narcotopia (Hardback)

In Search of the Asian Drug Cartel that Outwitted the CIA

Patrick Winn

Award-winning journalist – and author of Hello, Shadowlands – Patrick Winn reveals the inside story of a forbidden republic – the narco-state of the Wa.

The jagged mountains dividing China and Burma belong to the Wa, an indigenous group who have outwitted the CIA to create the world's mightiest narco-state, controlling more territory than Israel and with more troops than Sweden. Are they crime lords? Or visionaries?

Wa State has become a real nation with its own highways, anthems, schools and flags. Its leaders promise freedom, using profits from trafficking heroin and meth to attain what China's other frontier peoples, Tibetans and Uyghurs, can only dream of: a state of their own. Patrick Winn embarks on a risky journey of discovery, chasing clues about the forbidden republic from Thailand to Burma to the secretive Wa State itself.

Patrick Winn is an investigative journalist who covers rebellion and black markets in Southeast Asia. He has received a National Press Club award and is also a three-time winner of Amnesty International's Human Rights Press Awards. He is currently Asia correspondent for The World, broadcast on NPR member stations, and is the author of Hello, Shadowlands.

Those who fail to read this forsake their chance to know the truthRoberto Saviano
An outstanding book packed with history, humour, and adventure. America's struggle to thwart them Winn is the perfect guide to these highland outlaws and their incredible, defiant narcostate. This is the best reportage to come out of Southeast Asia in years.Graeme Wood, author of The Way of Strangers
A riveting portrait of a little-known and often vilified people; a harrowing tale of Asia's epic, multibillion-dollar drugs trade.Thant Myint-U, author The Hidden History of Burma
Winn has made a riveting read out of the largely overlooked- but critically important- Wa State …. The history behind it, the masterminds pulling the strings, and the many CIA operations against them. It's a fascinating and incredibly well-researched dive into Asia's underworld and some of the greatest narcotics traffickers in the region. And above all, it's beautifully crafted storytelling.Isobel Yeung
Unputdownable …. An authentic page-turner revealing why the global drug problem remains unsolved.Khuensai Jaiyen, former secretary to drug lord Khun Sa
Part gangster saga, part espionage thriller, and part liberation epic, Winn's narrative alternates between rollicking adventure and harrowing violence conveyed in vivid, muscular prose.Publishers Weekly
At times, Narcotopia reads like a satire from the mind of Joseph Heller … Winn tells this complex story with admirable clarity and a healthy dose of humour, and has drawn on a huge range of CIA and DEA documents, 'some declassified, others acquired by creative means'.The Daily Telegraph
Narcotopia does the foreign correspondent's job par excellence: it explains an unknown corner of the world and reminds us of the incredible stories that exist beyond our limited western horizons. The Times Literary Supplement

Finding Endurance (Paperback)

Shackleton, My Father and a World Without End

Darrel Bristow-Bovey

Finding Endurance is beautiful, thrilling, heroic and kind, a ripping yarn and a generous and humane reflection on this business of being human.

Finding Endurance is beautiful, thrilling, heroic and kind, a ripping yarn and a generous and humane reflection on this business of being human.
Tender, heartfelt and lyrical.
Engaging, absorbing and crammed with marvellous stories, Finding Endurance is a tale about exploring the cold, told with much warmthMick Herron
I was held spellbound by this recounting of one of the world's great adventure stories. But beyond the gripping polar ordeal, I was moved to the core by tender insights – into love, home, fathers and sons, and the long game of life – that emerge like veins of bright and dark water through the ice. Bristow-Bovey shares a deep knowledge of his subject with great style – and more than a touch of Shackleton's own verve and heart. An exhilarating read.Henrietta Rose-Innes, author of Green Lion
A wonderful, thoughtful account of the Endurance expedition and its fabled boss: as Darrel Bristow-Bovey points out in these pages, "We should indeed all be such failures as Shackleton." In weaving in a personal story – his father claimed to have sailed south on Endurance – Bristow-Bovey reveals ways in which "the human heart has space for opposite things". I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
With elegiac considerations of subjects including time, hope, and ice, Finding Endurance is a grace-filled memoir about a father and a resilient Antarctic legend … complemented by beautiful elements of nature writing, biography, and the heroics of polar exploration … a tender tribute to family.Foreword

UPROAR!

UPROAR! (Paperback)

Satire, Scandal and Printmakers in Georgian London

Alice Loxton

**A brilliant new history of Georgian Britain through the eyes of the artists who immortalised it, by one of the UK's most exciting young historians**

'Alice Loxton is the star of her generation … the next big thing in history' DAN SNOW

'Vivid, pacey and endlessly engaging, this brilliant debut brings the late Georgian period dazzlingly to life. Irresistible stuff' TRACY BORMAN

London, 1772: a young artist called Thomas Rowlandson is making his way through the grimy backstreets of the capital, on his way to begin his studies at the Royal Academy Schools. Within a few years, James Gillray and Isaac Cruikshank would join him in Piccadilly, turning satire into an artform, taking on the British establishment, and forever changing the way we view power.

Set against a backdrop of royal madness, political intrigue, the birth of modern celebrity, French revolution, American independence and the Napoleonic Wars, UPROAR! follows the satirists as they lampoon those in power, from the Prince Regent to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Their prints and illustrations deconstruct the political and social landscape with surreal and razor-sharp wit, as the three men vie with each other to create the most iconic images of the day.

Alice Loxton's writing fizzes with energy on every page, and never fails to convince us that Gillray and his gang profoundly altered British humour, setting the stage for everything from Gilbert and Sullivan to Private Eye and Spitting Image today. This is a book that will cause readers to reappraise everything they think they know about genteel Georgian London, and see it for what it was – a time of UPROAR!

Alice Loxton is a history broadcaster and writer. She has over two million followers on social media (@history_alice). She has appeared on many channels including Sky Arts, Channel 5, BBC News and History Hit, and has worked with a wide array of organisations to bring history to mainstream audiences (including Christie's, Meta, The National Trust, 10 Downing Street, The Royal Collection Trust, The National Portrait Gallery and The National Gallery). UPROAR! is Alice's first book.

Kidnapped by the Junta

Kidnapped by the Junta (Paperback)

Inside Argentina's Wars with Britain and Itself

Julian Manyon

'Fascinating … if this gripping account teaches anything, it is the folly of tyrannical regimes believing they can act with the same violence and impunity abroad as they do at home' THE SPECTATOR

'Heart-thumpingly powerful … history told from the closest and most frightening quarters.' SINCLAIR MCKAY, author of The Secret Life of Bletchley Park

Forty years on from the outbreak of the war, acclaimed TV journalist Julian Manyon digs down into Argentina's 'Dirty War' and its effect on the Falklands conflict

On May 12th, 1982, after the first bloody exchanges of the Falklands War, journalist Julian Manyon and his TV crew were kidnapped on the streets of Buenos Aires and put through a traumatic mock execution by the secret police. Less than eight hours later they were invited to the Presidential Palace to film a world – exclusive interview with an apologetic President Galtieri, the dictator and head of the Argentine Junta.

Spurred on by the recent release of declassified CIA documents about Argentina's 'Dirty War', Manyon discovered that his kidnapper was a key figure in the Junta's bloody struggle against left-wing opposition, with a terrifying record of torture and murder. Also in the secret documents were details of the wider picture – the turmoil inside the Junta as the war with Britain got under way, and how Argentina succeeded in acquiring vital US military equipment which made its war effort possible.

First published on the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict, this book is an extraordinary insight into the war behind the war. Manyon provides a harrowing depiction of the campaign of terror that the Junta waged on its own population, and a new perspective on an episode of history more often centred on Mrs Thatcher, the Belgrano and the battle of Goose Green.

'Shocking, terrifying and revealing. Ground-breaking history, expertly told – a dramatic new insight into the Falklands conflict.' ROGER BOLTON, BBC journalist and broadcaster

Julian Manyon was a journalist specialising in international stories for more than 40 years, starting in Vietnam. He covered the Falklands War in Argentina for Thames Television's TV Eye and then became a long-serving foreign correspondent for ITN, winning numerous awards for his work. He lives with his wife on their small farm in the south of England.

Drawing on a huge tranche of recently declassified US documents, Julian Manyon authoritatively nails the Argentine Junta's regime as one of the most depraved and deluded of modern times. The Jay, The Beech and the Limpetshell

The Jay, The Beech and the Limpetshell (Paperback)

Finding Wild Things With My Kids

Richard Smyth

'Generous, moving and alive. A gift' – Tim Dee, author of Greenery

'Intelligent, thought-provoking and always, always interesting' – Cal Flyn, author of Islands of Abandonment

'Smyth writes with warmth and engaging perception about our relationship and understanding of the natural world on our doorsteps' – Jon Dunn, author of The Glitter in the Green

'Fresh and tender and playful' – Patrick Galbraith, author of In Search of One Last Song

Weren't they richer, rock pools, wasn't the seashore busier, when I was a kid?

Richard Smyth had always been drawn to the natural world, but when he became a father he found a new joy and a new urgency in showing his kids the everyday wild things around them. As he and his children explore rockpools in Whitley Bay, or the woods and moors near his Yorkshire home, he imagines the world they might inhabit as they grow up.

Through different objects discovered on their wanderings – a beech leaf, a jay feather, a limpetshell – Smyth examines his own past as well as that of the early natural historians, weaving together history, memoir, and environmentalism to form a new kind of nature writing: one that asks both what we have lost, and what we have yet to find.

Richard Smyth is a writer and critic. He is author of six books of non-fiction, including A Sweet Wild Note and An Indifference of Birds, and the novel The Woodcock. His short stories have also been widely published and broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

All children are born naturalists and wedded to the living world. One of the tragedies of modern human life is that adulthood demands that we forget or suppress or deny this first love. By watching human nature: seeing his children become themselves, reporting on curious naturalists of old, reflecting on his own evolution as a nature-lover, Richard Smyth has been able to take steps towards rewilding himself and doing so he offers us all the chance to recover our inner animal selves. This is a touching book in all senses of the word, it is his tenderest book yet, and his truest. Generous, moving and alive. A gift.Tim Dee, author of GREENERY
Intelligent, thought-provoking and always, always interesting. Children are full of wonder but they are also full of questions, forcing us to look afresh at the world around us. What I love about Richard Smyth's writing is his willingness to engage with moral grey areas the uncomfortable and the unexpected. He also makes me laugh. Dark and light: that's what I want from a bookCal Flyn, author of ISLANDS OF ABANDONMENT
A searching study of the nature of curiosity, and the curiosity of nature, Smyth writes with warmth and engaging perception about our relationship and understanding of the natural world on our doorstepsJon Dunn, author of THE GLITTER IN THE GREEN
Fresh and tender and playful. In truth, a book about sharing the wonders of nature with your kids could be the ickiest thing going, but it isn't that at all. It's about society and love and identity but it's also a raw exploration of the way that children experience the world and the way that those experiences challenge adult self-delusion. Nature writing can be earnest and handwringing but this book isn't: I laughed and laughed. I imagine it wasn't Smyth's intention to write a call to breed but it's hard to read The Jay, the Beech and the Limpetshell without thinking that really we should all have some children, to avoid missing out on the joy of showing them finches in the parkPatrick Galbraith, author of IN SEARCH OF ONE LAST SONG

A delightfully irreverent, charming and hilarious guide on how to engage young children with nature, written with a real understanding of the way they experience the world

Stephen Moss, author of TEN BIRDS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

Richard Smyth mixes up a rollicking and compulsively readable cocktail of memoir, environmental history, and tips for the nature-minded parent. Irreverent and earnest in perfect measure, The Jay, The Beech and the Limpetshell is, at heart, an ode to wonderThor Hanson, author of BUZZ and HURRICANE LIZARDS AND PLASTIC SQUID
The Jay, The Beech and the Limpetshell is a marvellous book, in that it is full of marvels. Richard's prose is one such marvel: fast-paced, musical, and frequently very funny. So too his erudition and seemingly effortless range of reference. Most marvellous of all, though, is his loving, achingly honest commitment to bequeathing his children a world at which to marvelNick Acheson, author of THE MEANING OF GEESE

Well Beings

Well Beings (Hardback)

How the Seventies Lost Its Mind and Taught Us to Find Ourselves

James Riley

James Riley, author of the cult hit The Bad Trip: Dark Omens, New Worlds and the End of the Sixties, returns with another incisive and thought-provoking cultural history, turning his trenchant eye to the wellness industry that emerged in the 1970s.

Concepts such as wellness and self-care may feel like distinctly twenty-first century ideas, but they first gained traction as part of the New Age health movements that began to flourish in the wake of the 1960s. Riley dives into this strange and hypnotic world of panoramic coastal retreats and darkened floatation tanks, blending a page-turning narrative with illuminating explorations of the era's music, film, art and literature.

Well Beings delves deep into the mind of the seventies – its popular culture, its radical philosophies, its approach to health and its sense of social crisis. It tells the story of what was sought, what was found and how these explorations helped the 'Me Decade' find itself. In so doing, it questions what good health means today and reveals what the seventies can teach us about the strange art of being well.

James Riley is a Fellow of English Literature at Girton College, Cambridge, focusing on modern and contemporary literature, popular film and 1960s culture. His previous titles include The Bad Trip: Dark Omens, New Worlds and the End of the Sixties. He also makes films and performs spoken word poetry.

As James Riley points out in Well Beings, if the 1960s were about changing the world, the 1970s were about changing yourself. From ashrams to the wellness industry, from primal screaming to neoliberalism, Riley's fresh take on the 1970s lays bare the rampant culture of narcissism that characterised this decade. Wide-ranging and written with flair, this is an eye-opening account of 1970s culture. Douglas Field
Riley weaves an attractively readable story from hot tubs to high theory, via Hollywood movies and British sitcoms. And he urges us to continue taking the pursuit of well-being seriously despite the many disconcerting deviations along the way. Highly entertaining and enlightening.Alastair J. Reid
Having navigated us through the late 1960s' Bad Trip, James Riley now explores how the 1970s sought to make us Well Beings. Diving deep into the rich cultural resources of a much derided decade, Riley uncovers a complex history chartered towards self-discovery and a cure for our collective ills.Matthew Worley, Professor of Modern History (University of Reading)
James Riley 's new book is a cogent and provocative overview of the growth of the wellness movement in the 1970s that not only provides a comprehensive account of the cultural and political context for "wellness" but also pinpoints the origins of many of the attitudes that inform thinking about health and lifestyle today. Riley charts the malaises and ennui of a pivotal decade in a clear and witty narrative with a mordant sense of humour that will evoke moments of perhaps painful recognition in anyone who has sampled any of the plethora of philosophies and therapies whose development he describes. From gurus and encounter groups to flotation tanks and rebirthing, Riley's account is informed by an impressive breadth of research and provides real insight and understanding.Judith Noble, Professor of Film and the Occult, Arts University Plymouth
In this fantastically witty book, James Riley reminds us about the history and roots of wellbeing as a movement with its commercial appeal, absurdities and curiosities.Thomas Roulet, Professor of Organisational Sociology & Leadership, University of Cambridge
An engrossing, thought-provoking and entertaining study of the search for who we are and what makes us 'well' in body and mind. The Spectator
In his expansive study, Riley draws out the many historical roots and consequences of the 1970s inward turn … Well Beings is a highly readable, alternative historyManchester Review of Books
A roaming, eclectic tour of the 1970s via film, literature, and music … Riley deftly shows how far we have drifted from the socially grounded culture of wellness that was prominent in the '70sThe Camera
Riley is a well-read guide. The book deals with events, people, music and films from the 1970s, setting them in a longer-lived cultural context … Well Beings illuminates, in particular, the idea of 'spiritual privilege'.The Times Literary Supplement
But what is wellness? And how can we understand its benefits while jettisoning the charlatans and pointless interventions? I found the answers – plus some fantastically weird anecdotes – in James Riley's engrossing and timely book … In Well Beings, he reanimates the mood of the 1970s with a range of contemporary cultural resources from books, philosophy, politics, even popular British sitcoms of the time.Financial Times

TEN MEN, MANY STORIES.

At the beginning of the year, Kitty Ruskin decided it was time to embrace her sexuality, taking advantage of all the joys that being young, free and single bring and having fun, easy, no-strings sex with whomever she desired.

She got on the apps and started swiping. What followed was sometimes sexy, frequently funny, occasionally shocking and, sadly, all too often fraught with pain and danger. It was not the carefree adventure she had envisaged; it was something altogether darker.

Ten Men is one woman's tale told with searing honesty. It's an exploration of the 'blurred lines' that even seemingly nice guys can exploit, a meditation on the lack of clarity around consent and a call to arms to combat a culture that seems to thrive on women's vulnerability.

Kitty Ruskin works for TIME. After completing a Masters in Literature from the University of Edinburgh, she started her career in fashion writing and (less glamorously) in writing profiles for wedding bands. Now she writes about women's issues and mental health, and specialises in audience engagement. Ten Men is her debut book.

The Box with the Sunflower Clasp

The Box with the Sunflower Clasp (Paperback)

Uncovering a Jewish Family's Flight to Wartime Shanghai

Rachel Meller

*SHORTLISTED FOR THE RSL CHRISTOPHER BLAND PRIZE 2024*

'
A transfixingly readable amalgam of memoir and history… Superbly written and researched…. [Meller] has turned the raw material of her life into literature'
Ian Thomson, author of Primo Levi

Rachel Meller was never close to her aunt Lisbeth, a cool, unemotional woman with a drawling Viennese-Californian accent, a cigarette in her hand. But when Lisbeth died, she left Rachel an intricately carved Chinese box with a sunflower clasp. Inside the box were photographs, letters and documents that led Rachel to uncover a story she had never known: that of a passionate Jewish teenager growing up in elegant Vienna, who was caught up by war, and forced to flee to Shanghai.

Far from home, in a strange city, Lisbeth and her parents build a new life – a life of small joys and great hardship, surrounded by many others who, like them, have fled Hitler and the Nazis. 1930s Shanghai is a metropolis where the old rules do not apply – a city of fabulous wealth and crushing poverty, where disease is rife, and gangsters rub shoulders with rich emigrés; where summer brings unspeakable heat, and winter is bitterly cold; and where European refugees build community and, maybe, a young woman can find love.

Set against a backdrop of the war in the Far East, The Box with the Sunflower Clasp is a sweeping family memoir that tells the hidden history of the Jews of Shanghai. Rachel Meller writes with elegance and insight as she examines what it means to survive, and what the legacy of displacement and war might mean for the generation that comes afterwards.

Rachel Meller grew up near London, the middle daughter of Austrian Jewish refugees. After studying neurobiology at Sussex, and research into hormones and behaviour at Cambridge, she became a writer in a communication consultancy. The Box with the Sunflower Clasp is her first book.

The Box with the Sunflower Clasp is a transfixingly readable amalgam of memoir and history, which poignantly evokes the pain and loss attendant on a Viennese Jewish woman's exile in Shanghai during the war. Superbly written and researched, Rachel Meller's is by no means a conventional account. Into her extraordinary family saga Meller has assimilated elements of detection, travel, biography, moral essay and personal revelation. She has turned the raw material of her life into literatureIan Thomson, author of PRIMO LEVI
Rachel Meller sensitively tells the story of her aunt Lisbeth and her parents who arrived in Shanghai from Vienna in March 1940… FascinatingHarry Freedman, author of BRITAIN'S JEWS
This meticulously researched family memoir is as full of drama, emotion and feeling as any novel. It explores a little-known corner of history but also the endlessly fascinating subject of close family relationships and how mysterious those we love can sometimes be. I found it completely engrossingAdèle Geras, author of FACING THE LIGHT
This memoir is as absorbing as any William Boyd novel – the fact that it's all carefully documented and true makes it even more fascinating. I predict it will become a distinguished account of a scarcely credible world of gangsters, Jewish millionaires, British class snobbery and the fate of one small family in a world where one false move can lead to death. Totally absorbing. A must-read.The Cambridge CritiqueThe Cambridge Critique

The Beacon Bike

The Beacon Bike (Hardback)

Around England and Wales in 327 Lighthouses

Edward Peppitt

The incredible story of a 3,500-mile cycle ride to explore the onshore and offshore lighthouses around the coastline of England and Wales, proving that a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis doesn't mean giving up on a lifelong dream.

The Beacon Bike is the inspirational tale of one man's quest to fulfil the promise he made to himself as a small child, nestled in the bed of an attic room while the glow of Dungeness lighthouse flashed past his window – a comforting, ever-present companion. It is also a loving tribute to the coast; not only its beautiful landscape, but also the communities that make it so special. It celebrates the generosity of spirit found in people around the country, as well as the history of the iconic lights that brighten their world.

This journey is a testament to the joy of life's simple pleasures. A warm welcome at the end of a long day. The fire of a child's imagination, rekindled in later life. The power of a light that pierces the darkness.

Ed Peppitt is a fundraising ambassador for Shift MS, a charity aimed at keeping MS suffers as active as possible. He is also the Association of Lighthouse Keeper's representative for south-east England. Ed produces a podcast for the Booksellers Association and has worked with organisations including Channel 4 and Bournemouth University. He lives by the coast with his wife and three children.

Hijab Butch Blues

Hijab Butch Blues (Paperback)

A Memoir

Lamya H

'A masterful, must-read contribution to conversations on power, justice, healing, and devotion from a singular voice I now trust with my whole heart'
GLENNON DOYLE, author of Untamed

**Roxane Gay's Book Club March 2023 Pick**

When Lamya is fourteen, she decides to disappear.

It seems easier to ease herself out of sight than to grapple with the difficulty of taking shape in a world that doesn't fit. She is a queer teenager growing up in a Muslim household, a South Asian in a Middle Eastern country. But during her Quran class, she reads a passage about Maryam, and suddenly everything shifts: if Maryam was never touched by any man, could Maryam be… like Lamya?

Written with deep intelligence and a fierce humour, Hijab Butch Blues follows Lamya as she travels to the United States, as she comes out, and as she navigates the complexities of the immigration system – and the queer dating scene. At each step, she turns to her faith to make sense of her life, weaving stories from the Quran together with her own experiences: Musa leading his people to freedom; Allah, who is neither male nor female; and Nuh, who built an ark, just as Lamya is finally able to become the architect of her own story.

Raw and unflinching, Hijab Butch Blues heralds the arrival of a truly original voice, asking powerful questions about gender and sexuality, relationships, identity and faith, and what it means to build a life of one's own.

Lamya H is a former Lambda Literary Fellow whose writing has appeared in Vice, Salon, Vox, Black Girl Dangerous, Autostraddle, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She currently lives in New York with her partner.

Harpy

Harpy (Hardback)

A Manifesto for Childfree Women

Caroline Magennis

'Harpy is a tonic; a tongue-in-cheek manual for dealing with Spanish Inquisition-style questioning about saying pass to procreation and building an enriching life beyond the nuclear family' VOGUE

'Harpy made me nod in recognition, and shake my head with sorrow, and then it made me laugh out loud' EMILIE PINE, author of NOTES TO SELF and RUTH & PEN

'Defiant, funny and inspiring' SEÁN HEWITT, author of ALL DOWN DARKNESS WIDE

Each generation has more childfree women than the one before. For many, it is an active decision made for a wide range of reasons. Despite this growing trend, we continue to live in a society where women are often judged for deciding to remain childfree – for not conforming to narrow expectations. For being a Harpy.

In this timely and thoughtful book, Caroline Magennis looks beyond the often-divisive conversation around women who choose to be childfree and offers an alternative message of hope and celebration. With humour and intelligence, she explores why motherhood isn't right for everybody and how any woman – whether a parent or childfree – can live a full life, while also reminding the reader that your freedoms and the right to autonomy should never be taken for granted.

Caroline Magennis is an academic and writer based in Manchester. Her writing has appeared in The Independent, Prospect Magazine and The Irish Times. Her book, Northern Irish Writing After the Troubles, has been named the joint winner of the British Association for Contemporary Literary Studies Monograph Prize 2022.

Amid a flood of sensationalist headlines about declining birth rates, Caroline Magennis's Harpy is a tonic: a tongue-in-cheek manual for dealing with Spanish Inquisition-style questioning about saying pass to procreation and building an enriching life beyond the nuclear family.Vogue

A rallying cry for child-free women.Stylist

In Harpy, Caroline Magennis promises to outline the perils and pitfalls that people without children encounter in our personal and professional lives as we navigate other people's expectations. What is really unusual in this book is the way Magennis also keeps her promise to showcase some of ways one might make a life outside traditional expectations – ways of being joyful, of being singular, of being in a community that is, as she puts it, 'completely your own'.
Harpy made me nod in recognition, and shake my head with sorrow, and then it made me laugh out loud. Because life without kids in a world that expects the opposite can be challenging and sad, and it can also be hilarious. This is that rare thing, a book which captures both sides.

Emilie Pine, author of Notes to Self and Ruth & Pen

Defiant, funny and inspiring, Harpy holds open a vital space to think about alternative lives, self-invention and feminist camaraderieSeán Hewitt, author of All Down Darkness Wide
Harpy is a measured, compassionate and truly compelling read. I've been waiting to read a book like this for such a long time. It's not often I see my own experience so honestly and respectfully reflected. I was struck by the way Magennis takes such care to share stories which often go unheard or dismissed. This book will be the catalyst for so many conversations.Jan Carson, author of The Raptures
Written with all of Caroline Magennis's characteristic refreshing candour, Harpy is a sharp, timely book about the assumptions and expectations that still keep women down, and a heartfelt vision of the freedoms that can and do enrich us. Though subtitled 'a manifesto for childfree women', this book is written for us all.Lucy Caldwell, author of These Days
Harpy is an important book, it will affirm childfree readers and open the eyes of everyone else. It's a book of clear thinking and deep feeling, I can see so many people learning from the stories in these pages, the voices of women telling us who they are. I do think parents will find themselves moved and inspired by the book, not least to ask more interesting questions of their childfree friends at dinner parties. Most importantly though, Harpy belongs to the harpies. This book is their place, for community, inspiration, and wild hopefulness.Claire Lynch, author of Small: On Motherhoods
Blending personal testimonies and factual observations, Magennis offers a uniquely positive perspective on childlessness that focuses on the inspiration that can be found in real and fictional heroines.Emma Duval (MillennialEmma)
A much-needed book on the topic of being childfree … warm, relatable and humourous.Margaret O'Connor, Are Kids For Me?
Harpy is so much more than a manifesto for childfree women, it's a celebration of us all and the amazing things we've been able to do with our lives. Weaving together Caroline's own hilarious anecdotes with the life stories of her fellow harpies, and the narratives fed to us through media and literature, this vibrant, vital book is a personal, political, and above all, positive portrayal of childfree life in the twenty-first century.Zoë Noble, Founder of We are Childfree

A Journey into Our Restless Past

'A gentle, personal and very readable book' JULIA BLACKBURN AUTHOR OF TIME SONG

'A triumph!' JAMES CANTON, AUTHOR OF THE OAK PAPERS

'I loved this book' FRANCIS PRYOR

On paths, roads, seas, in the air, and in space – there has never been so much human movement. In contrast we think of the past as static, 'frozen in time'. But archaeologists have in fact always found evidence for humanity's irrepressible restlessness. Now, latest developments in science and archaeology are transforming this evidence and overturning how we understand the past movement of humankind.

In this book, archaeologist Jim Leary traces the past 3.5 million years to reveal how people have always been moving, how travel has historically been enforced (or prohibited) by people with power, and how our forebears showed incredible bravery and ingenuity to journey across continents and oceans.

With Leary to show the way, you'll follow the footsteps of early hunter-gatherers preserved in mud, and tread ancient trackways hollowed by feet over time. Passing drovers, wayfarers and pilgrims, you'll see who got to move, and how people moved. And you'll go on long-distance journeys and migrations to see how movement has shaped our world.

Dr Jim Leary is an archaeologist at the University of York and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He has directed major excavations across Britain, including Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, the largest Neolithic monument in Europe. A passionate walker, much of his research is centred on the way people moved around in the past.

Engaging, authoritative and full of fascinating stories of the past. This book shows that life is not centred on hearth and house, as we are so often told, but is shaped by relentless movement, along tracks and trails. By focusing on mobility, Jim Leary has managed to reanimate the past, revealing the hidden but vital contribution that migration has always made to the shaping of the worldRay Mears
A gentle, personal and very readable book that gives life to the dynamic sequence of activity, effort and extraordinary determination that makes up our human pastJulia Blackburn, author of Time Song

I loved this book. It's a highly readable account of how and why people have moved around on the surface of the earth, across land and sea … What makes this book so special is that everything is discussed within the context of life at the time: who were using the paths or the boats and why were they doing it? Most importantly it is so relevant to us today, as we try to steer our way
through times of increasing instability

Francis Pryor, archaeologist and author

Archaeologists have a superpower: time travel. Their digs show us cold hearths and colder graves, but as Jim Leary shows in this gripping read, the past was hot-blooded and alive with the movement of people who loved and laughed as we do. Yet history and archaeology are written as though humans and our creations are fixed, frozen entities: screenshots of past lives, not videos. Our ideas of our origins, history and ourselves today must all change, and those new ideas are not only more exciting, but tell us more about both our past and our future. They are also trueJohn Harrison, award winning travel writer
Jim Leary takes us into the little explored realm of ancient movement. We walk with hominins and Neanderthals, explore deep caves, herd cattle, and become pilgrims, ocean voyagers and long-distance walkers. Leary is a passionate walker, who combines science with his first-hand experience and observation out and about. This beautifully written, entertaining essay melds personal experience with archaeological and historical wisdom. The result is a truly remarkable and original book that thinks profoundly about the past. Read this and be inspired!Brian Fagan, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of California and author
A book about the movements of humans could be a little dull, don't you think? Well, not a bit of it. Jim Leary's archaeological passion is "paths over pyramids" and Footmarks is as lively and entertaining an exploration of human wanderings as you could ever hope to read. It links our colourful and complex history to how we live today, clearing up a few notable misconceptions along the way. This compelling, highly original book will change the way you think about landscape and our place within it Ian Carter, author of Human, Nature
Engaging and impassioned, Footmarks is an enchanting stroll through the deep history of human wanderings across the world. This book will delight and entice all who muse on the ways in which we have ever walked upon this earth. A triumph!James Canton, author of The Oak Papers
Footmarks takes us on a magnificent voyage tracing the fascinating history and restless patterns of human movement. Leary explores the many ways archaeology can reveal the dynamism of past lives and the way in which we both make and are made by the paths we take. Brimming with detail yet written lightly and with unashamed affection, this delightful book shows how we are all part of a vast, whirling dance that's been going on for millenniaRebecca Wragg Sykes, author of Kindred
Leary awakes in the reader the desire to walk, to wander, to meander and ponder. With charm, wit and warmth, we are led through an alternative archaeology, one where movement and mobility take precedence over settlement and sedentism. Thought-provoking and sustained by a depth of knowledge of human cultures, Footmarks reminds us that the restless journey and some of the most meaningful experiences along its path leave no trace but the imprints where feet have troddenAlex Langlands, author of Craeft

The Christina that alternately walks and pushes us and tickles us through these pages is an ever-evolving character whom I … don't want to ever let go of. This is not a book for friends and family, this is a witty, hilarious at times, poignant story of a woman breaking free from a narrative she was sold as a girl.Alyson Feltes, Writer/Co-EP, Ozark

[…] In Search of Mr. Darcy appeals to a wide audience, offering wisdom for women of all ages and walks of life. The Kremlin's Noose

The Kremlin's Noose (Hardback)

Vladimir Putin’s Bitter Feud with the Oligarch Who Made Him Ruler of Russia

Amy Knight

A Guardian Book of the Day
'By telling the story of Putin and Berezovsky – a sort of modern reincarnation of Stalin and Trotsky – Knight shines a penetrating light on post-communist Russia'

In The Kremlin's Noose Amy Knight tells the riveting story of Vladimir Putin and the oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who forged a relationship in the early years of the Yeltsin era.

Berezovsky later played a crucial role in Putin's rise to the Russian presidency in March 2000. When Putin began dismantling Boris Yeltsin's democratic reforms, Berezovsky came into conflict with the new Russian leader by reproaching him publicly. Their relationship quickly disintegrated into a bitter feud played out against the backdrop of billion-dollar financial deals, Kremlin in-fighting and international politics.

Dubbed the 'Godfather of the Kremlin' by the slain Russian-American journalist Paul Klebnikov, Berezovsky was a successful businessman and media mogul who had an outsized role in Russia after 1991. Worth a reported $3 billion by 1997, Berezovsky engineered the re-election of Yeltsin as president in 1996 and negotiated an end to the 1995-96 Chechen war. Despite his own wealth, power and influence, once he became Putin's enemy, Berezovsky was forced into exile in Britain, where he waged a determined campaign to topple Putin. Kremlin authorities responded with bogus criminal charges and demanded Berezovsky's extradition. Death threats soon followed. In March 2013, after losing a British court battle with another Russian oligarch, Berezovsky was found dead at his ex-wife's mansion outside London. Whether he died from suicide or murder remains a mystery.

The Kremlin's Noose sheds crucial new light on the Kremlin's volatile politics under Yeltsin and Putin, helping us understand why democracy in Russia failed so badly. Knight provides a fascinating narrative of Putin's rise to power and his authoritarian rule, told through the prism of his relationship with Russia's once most powerful oligarch, Boris Berezovsky.

Amy Knight earned her PhD in Russian politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has taught at the LSE, Johns Hopkins, SAIS and Carleton University. She worked for eighteen years at the US Library of Congress as a Soviet/Russian affairs specialist.

This is a deeply researched book, undeniably the best and most detailed examination so far of how important it is to beware what you wish for, and how Berezovsky elevated and then fell foul of Putin.Mark Galeotti, author of Putin's Wars
Putin casts a larger shadow over Russia's fate than anyone expected when he became president and so do those who got him to the Kremlin-Berezovsky first among them. Their roles in Russia's history must be investigated. A veteran Russia watcher, Amy Knight is perfectly equipped to do this.Andrei Soldatov, cofounder and editor of Agentura.ru, coauthor of The Compatriots
As one of the world's most careful observers of Russian elite politics, Knight has written another compelling book of how Berezovsky and other members of Yeltsin's inner circle failed to comprehend the perils of putting Putin in power, a horrific miscalculation for Ukrainians first and foremost, but also for all those around the world who believe in democracy and peace and have been paying ever since.Michael McFaul, author of From Cold War to Hot Peace
A chilling, compellingly written exploration of Russian politics.Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
A definitive study of Berezovsky's life and flamboyant times … Knight – a Soviet and Russian affairs specialist – has written an invaluable primer on Moscow's transformation from semi-democracy under Yeltsin into today's "closed fortress"Luke Harding, author of Collusion: Secret Meetings, Dirty Money, and How Russia Helped Donald Trump Win

Nine Musings on Time

Nine Musings on Time (Paperback)

Science Fiction, Science Fact, and the Truth about Time Travel

John Gribbin

Time travel is a familiar theme of science fiction, but is it really possible?

Surprisingly, time travel is not forbidden by the laws of physics – and John Gribbin argues that if it is not impossible then it must be possible.

Gribbin brilliantly illustrates the possibilities of time travel by comparing familiar themes from science fiction with their real-world scientific counterparts, including Einstein's theories of relativity, black holes, quantum physics, and the multiverse, illuminated by examples from the fictional tales of Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, Carl Sagan and others.

The result is an entertaining guide to some deep mysteries of the Universe which may leave you wondering whether time actually passes at all, and if it does, whether we are moving forwards or backwards. A must-read for science fiction fans and anyone intrigued by deep science.

John Gribbin's numerous bestselling books include In Search of Schrödinger's Cat and Six Impossible Things, which was shortlisted for the 2019 Royal Society Science Book Prize. He has been described as 'one of the finest and most prolific writers of popular science around' by the Spectator. In 2021, he was made Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Astronomy at the University of Sussex.
