The Year I Lay My Head in Water

The Year I Lay My Head in Water (Hardback)

Swimming Scandinavia in Search of a Better Life

Laura Hall

‘An inspiring dip into the swimming cultures of Scandinavia.’ – KATE REW

‘A hugely refreshing take on the open water experience – I devoured it in one sitting.’ – EMMA SIMPSON

‘A wonderful call to reflect, slow down, challenge yourself and live a life of intention.’ MARK AGNEW

Laying your head in water is what you do when you’re having a bad day. The water is where you go when you need time to think. It’s where you go when you reach a crossroads in your life.

Living in Copenhagen had been a dream for Laura Hall and it was working out – until it wasn’t. She discovered that the trials of life will follow you anywhere and felt herself disintegrating into stress and burn out. She was unmoored and unsure of how to find her place in the world.

What followed was a year swimming the cold seas of Scandinavia in search of answers and meaning. She swam in iceberg-filled seas in Greenland, experienced Viking spas in Iceland and visited beaches and piers all over Norway, Denmark and Sweden. During this year of discovery, Laura met other people doing the same thing and swapped notes, discovering ways to use the water to strengthen a bond with nature and get back to a more human way of life.

A love letter to the sea and the people of Scandinavia, this book is also a clarion call for anybody stuck in a rut who needs to rekindle their lust for life. It’s time to reconnect with the natural world. It’s time to lay your head in the water.

Laura Hall is an award-winning author, travel writer and journalist based in Copenhagen. She has written for outlets including The Sunday Times, BBC Travel, the Guardian, the Independent and Lonely Planet. The Year I Lay My Head in Water is her first memoir.

‘A hugely refreshing take on the open water experience – I devoured it in one sitting. The Year I Lay My Head in Water combines the fundamental joys of immersing in nature and finding a like-minded community. This book reminds us of what is wonderful about being human, and the magic that happens when you open yourself up to adventure. It’s a treat.’ – Emma Simpson, author of Breaking Waves

‘The words washed over me like I’d plunged into a frigid sea and emerged happier for it. This book is a wonderful call to reflect, slow down, challenge yourself and live a life of intention.’ – Mark Agnew, author of There Will Be Headwinds

‘An inspiring dip into the swimming cultures of Scandinavia.’ – Kate Rew, author of The Outdoor Swimmers’ Handbook

Del: Becoming a Voice for Young People

Del: Becoming a Voice for Young People (Paperback)

Delroy Ellis

When Del Ellis was growing up, he lost his way. Turning to crime, he was on the wrong path -a one-way ticket to a life of regret and pain for himself and those around him. Today he runs a successful youth outreach programme and charity, advocating for young people. How did he get here?

In this book, Del tells his story with searing honesty and directness. Reflecting on his former life, he explores the mistakes made and the lessons learnt while examining his own character, seeking reason in the contours of his life. With remarkable self-awareness, Del never shies away from the conflicting feelings and tensions that exist within us all.

Del managed to turn his life around, and doing so awakened a deep sense of duty to his community – he knew he had to give back and to stop others from making the same mistakes he did. Today, through YES Mentoring and Increase the Peace, he enables young people reach their potential and avoid a life of regret. This book is his inspiring story, told in his own inimitable voice.

Brainjacking

Brainjacking - cover coming soon

Brainjacking (Paperback)

The Science of Influence and Manipulation

Brian Clegg

Brainjacking takes us on a journey through advertising and marketing's attempts to understand and influence our thoughts and desires, from the earliest billboards to the technologies of the future. To discover how science intersects with our desires and decisions, the book pulls together three strands that have a huge impact on our lives: advertising, how much privacy we can and should have in the new electronic world, and how to draw the line been information and influence.

With Brian Clegg as your guide, this is a book that will help you unpick the insidious world of brainjacking. Expertly pulling together different strands on disparate topics including AI, Big Data, subliminal advertising and more, this essential investigation shows how new and old technology and science can be combined to influence human behaviour and beliefs.

Brian Clegg is a popular science writer whose Dice World and A Brief History of Infinity were both longlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books. He has written for publications including Nature, The Times and BBC Focus.

Introducing the Holocaust

Introducing the Holocaust (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Haim Bresheeth

Litza Jansz Stuart Hood

'Excellent … an astounding amount of material.'
Times Educational Supplement

Popular culture often portrays the Holocaust as a
horrific drama played out between Nazi executioners and ghetto Jewish victims –
in short, a single aberration of history.

Introducing
the Holocaust
is a powerful graphic guide that dissolves this
stereotype, explaining the causes and its relevance today. It places the
Holocaust where it belongs – at the centre of modern European and world
history.

Haim Bresheeth and Stuart Hood – along with Litza
Jansz's outstanding illustrations – bring a unique and unforgettable perspective
to how we think about this most dark of shadows on human history.

Haim Bresheeth is an Israeli filmmaker, photographer and a film studies scholar. Stuart Hood was a Scottish novelist, translator and a former British television producer and Controller of BBC Television. Litza Jansz has also illustrated Introducing Semiotics: A Graphic Guide.

Heidegger, Habermas and the Mobile Phone

Heidegger, Habermas and the Mobile Phone (Paperback)

George Myerson

Global mobile telephony is at the cutting edge of the communications revolution. Humanity, for Martin Heidegger, is 'the entity that talks'; Jurgen Habermas is a passionate advocate of authentic human interaction. Both are key thinkers in this encounter between alien visions of communication and the utopianism of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Ecology and the End of Postmodernism

Ecology and the End of Postmodernism (Paperback)

George Myerson

In 1979 Jean-Francois Lyotard claimed to have laid the 'grand narrative' to rest. Yet the ecological disasters of recent years Myerson argues, herald a return of the big story, and in a new way are a legitmation, after all, of science. Once again, the minutiae of the everyday are simultaneously part of the bigger picture…

Libido

Libido (Paperback)

Roger Kennedy

How relevant is the Freudian concept of Libido in contemporary psyhcoanalytical thought? Kennedy examines Freuds later concept of Eros as developing out of the earlier concept of libido, as well as looking at some of the links between Eros as Freud understood it, and as was put forward in an ancient thought.

Introducing Existentialism

Introducing Existentialism (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Oscar Zarate

Richard Appignanesi

Richard Appignanesi goes on a personal quest of Existentialism in its original state. He begins with Camus' question of suicide: 'Must life have a meaning to be lived?' Is absurdity at the heart of Existentialism? Or is Sartre right: is Existentialism 'the least scandalous, most technically austere' of all teachings?

This brilliant Graphic Guide explores Existentialism in a unique comic book-style.

Richard Appignanesi is the author of Introducing Freud and Introducing Postmodernism. Oscar Zarate is one of the UK's leading graphic artists. He has illustrated numerous Introducing series titles. His graphic novel A Small Killing won the Will Eisner Prize.
