The First War of Physics and the Secret History of the Atom Bomb 1939-49

Jim Baggott

Spanning ten historic years, from the discovery of nuclear fission in 1939 to 'Joe-1', the first Soviet atomic bomb test in August 1949, Atomic is the first fully realised popular account of the race between Nazi Germany, Britain, America and the Soviet Union to build atomic weapons.

Rich in personality, action, confrontation and deception, Jim Baggott's book tells an epic story of science and technology at the very limits of human understanding.

Jim Baggott is an award-winning science writer. Platform Souls

Platform Souls (Hardback)

The Trainspotter as 20th-Century Hero

Nicholas Whittaker

Nicholas Whittaker’s much-loved classic recollects the long sunny days of his childhood when, notepad in hand, jam sandwiches in the duffel bag, he happily spent his time jotting down train numbers during the Indian summer of steam and the heyday of diesel.

Whittaker returns to his roots in this updated edition, casting a sceptical eye over recent developments, catching up with old acquaintances and considering the toll that half a century of ridicule and a couple of decades of privatisation have wrought upon his beloved pastime.

As Andrew Martin notes in his Foreword, this is ‘one of the best books ever written about rail enthusiasm’. Equally it is a poetically written memoir of growing up in a more innocent age, a hymn to British eccentricity and to the virtues of observing the world around you: ‘Spotters – of trains, planes, buses or birds – are a last redoubt for something rapidly vanishing from our lives: looking outward, seeing, observing. People notice things less and less these days, while watching things more and more.’

Praise for the first edition:

‘An elegy: for the steam trains already vanishing when Whittaker’s hobby began in 1964; for the short-lived diesel age which followed; for an era of near innocence.’ Times Literary Supplement

‘Whittaker writes with humour and considerable evocative power … For anyone who will admit to having a childhood brush with this now derided hobby, Platform Souls brings it all rushing back.’ Independent

‘Destined to become the Fever Pitch of the sidings and embankments’ Publishing News

Nicholas Whittaker is the author of well-received histories of confectionery (Sweet Talk) and toys (Toys Were Us), as well as an account of life in the offices of Fiesta and Razzle magazines in the 1980s (Blue Period). He has written for the Telegraph, Guardian, Daily Mail and the Sunday Times. He lives in London.

Whittaker writes with great warmth and wit and his autobiographical style makes Platform Souls an engaging read, even for those who don't particularly share his love of railways.Shropshire Review

Balotelli

Balotelli (Paperback)

The Remarkable Story Behind the Sensational Headlines

Luca Caioli

Mario Balotelli has a reputation like no other in football. Since exploding on to the scene at Inter Milan in 2007, he has won league titles in both Italy and England, moving between Europe’s elite clubs.

Yet for all his undoubted talent, he is better known for his off-field antics – not least his infamous run-ins with both the police and Manchester’s firefighters. Once described by José Mourinho as ‘unmanageable’, match-winning performances at the highest level have continued to convince clubs such as AC Milan and Liverpool to give him a chance.

With exclusive access to friends, teammates and coaches, acclaimed football biographer Luca Caioli talks to the people best placed to explain the mystery that is Mario Balotelli.

Karl Doenitz and the Last Days of the Third Reich

Karl Doenitz and the Last Days of the Third Reich (Hardback)

Barry Turner

Among the military leaders of the Second World War, Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz remains a deeply enigmatic figure. As chief of the German submarine fleet he earned Allied respect as a formidable enemy. But after he succeeded Hitler – to whom he was unquestioningly loyal – as head of the Third Reich, his name became associated with all that was most hated in the Nazi regime.

Yet Doenitz deserves credit for ending the war quickly while trying to save his compatriots in the East – his Dunkirk-style operation across the Baltic rescued up to 2 million troops and civilian refugees.

Historian Barry Turner argues that while Doenitz can never be dissociated from the evil done under the Third Reich, his contribution to the war must be acknowledged in its entirety in order to properly understand the conflict.

An even-handed portrait of Nazi Germany’s last leader and a compellingly readable account of the culmination of the war in Europe, Karl Doenitz and the Last Days of the Third Reich gives a fascinating new perspective on a complex man at the heart of this crucial period in history.

Barry Turner is an acclaimed historian and Editor of The Statesman’s Yearbook (Palgrave) which has recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. His most recent books are Beacon for Change (Aurum Press, 2011) and with Tony Rennell, When Daddy Came Home (Arrow, 2014), described as ‘fascinating’ by the Daily Mail. He lives in London and south-west France.

Junk DNA

Junk DNA (Paperback)

A Journey Through the Dark Matter of the Genome

Nessa Carey

For decades, 98 per cent of our DNA was written off as ‘junk’ on the grounds that it did not code for proteins.

From rare genetic diseases to Down’s Syndrome, from viral infections to the ageing process, only now are the effects and the vital functions of these junk regions beginning to emerge.

Scientists’ rapidly growing knowledge of this often controversial field has already provided a successful cure for blindness and saved innocent people from death row via DNA fingerprinting, and looks set to revolutionise treatment for many medical conditions including obesity.

From Nessa Carey, author of the acclaimed The Epigenetics Revolution, this is the first book for a general readership on a subject that may underpin the secrets of human complexity – even the very origins of life on earth.

Nessa Carey has a PhD in virology from the University of Edinburgh and worked in the biotech and pharma industry for thirteen years. She is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College, London. Her previous book, The Epigenetics Revolution, was published by Icon Books in 2011. and described as a 'book that would have had Darwin swooning – anyone seriously interested in who we are and how we function should read this.'

Love Among the Ruins

Love Among the Ruins (Paperback)

A memoir of life and love in Hamburg, 1945

Harry Leslie Smith

'[Harry Leslie Smith] is absolutely one of my heroes. Everyone should read this and be humbled.' Annie Lennox

'A deep love of humanity is what animates Smith. He is a hero of our times.' Newsweek

'His straight-from-the-heart delivery makes these events seem as clear and immediate as if they happened yesterday' Morning Star

At 22, the war is over for RAF serviceman Harry Leslie Smith – the now 92-year-old activist and author of the acclaimed Harry’s Last Stand – but the battle for love and hope rages on. Stationed in occupied Hamburg, a city physically and emotionally ripped apart by Allied bombing, and determined to escape the grinding poverty of his Yorkshire youth, Harry unexpectedly finds a reason to stay: a young German woman by the name of Friede.

As their love develops, they must face both German suspicion and British disapproval of relations with ‘the enemy’.
Harry’s ardent, straight-from-the-heart memoir brings to life a city reduced to rubble, populated with refugees, black marketeers, corrupt businessmen and cynical soldiers. Love Among Ruins: A memoir of life and love in Hamburg is a unique snapshot of a terrible period in Europe’s history, and a passionate love letter to a city, to a woman, and to life itself.

Harry Leslie Smith‘s Guardian articles have been shared almost a quarter of a million times on Facebook and have attracted huge comment and debate. His book Harry’s Last Stand attracted huge praise, with Annie Lennox saying that Harry ‘is absolutely one of my heroes. Everyone should read this and be humbled.’ He lives in Yorkshire.

The Heart of the Matter

The Heart of the Matter (Hardback)

How Papworth Hospital transformed modern heart and lung care

Peter Pugh

Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, founded in 1916 to tackle the great killer disease of tuberculosis, is famous for carrying out the UK’s first heart transplant operation in 1979. It followed this up not only with many other heart transplants but also with the UK’s first heart and lung operation in 1984 and the world’s first heart, lung and liver transplant in 1986.

With unique access to Papworth’s archives, historian Peter Pugh here tells the story of this ground-breaking hospital for the first time. Alongside the background to that first UK heart transplant – and the ethical controversies that surrounded it – Pugh explores the opposition to heart operations in general, Papworth's difficulties dealing with NHS authorities especially over funding, and the discussions for over 50 years as to whether the hospital should move alongside Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge.

As an insight into the history of medicine and surgery in the UK, as well as a story literally of life and death, The Heart of the Matter will be compelling reading.

Peter Pugh was educated at Oundle and Cambridge, where he read History. He has written more than 50 official histories, including The Magic of a Name, a three-volume history of Rolls-Royce. He lives in Cambridge and Norfolk.

High Street Heroes

High Street Heroes (Paperback)

The Story of British Retail in 50 People

John Timpson

WHEN BUSINESSMAN John Timpson started his retailing career in 1960, there were no supermarkets, no out-of-town shopping centres and not even a hint of internet shopping. The British high street was full of made-to-measure tailors and traditional grocers. Among the household names were Mac Fisheries, Dewhurst, John Collier and Timothy Whites & Taylors.

In this enjoyable new book, Timpson shows how successive generations of forward-thinking shopkeepers and inspirational entrepreneurs have led the major retailers through a period of rapid change – people such as Ken Morrison, Ralph Halpern, Terence Conran and Anita Roddick, without whom our high streets would have looked very different.

This unique survey – from a man who knows a few things about success in retail – paints a compelling, personal and vivid picture of how shops have changed over the last 100 years and reveals who Timpson thinks has had the biggest influence on the shape of shopping in the ‘retail revolution’ that we have witnessed since the 1970s.

John Timpson CBE is Chairman of Timpson Ltd which has a UK turnover of £180m per year. His previous book was Ask John (Icon, 2014), based on his Daily Telegraph column of the same name. Timpson and his wife Alex have been foster carers for 32 years, during which time they have fostered 90 children. He lives in Cheshire.

13.8 (Hardback)

The Quest to Find the True Age of the Universe and the Theory of Everything

John Gribbin

The 20th century gave us two great theories of physics: the general theory of relativity, which describes the behaviour of things on a very large scale, including the entire Universe; and quantum theory, which describes the behaviour of things on a very small scale, the sub-atomic world. The refusal of the Universe to reveal an equation that combines these two great ideas has caused some people to doubt our whole understanding of physics.

In this landmark new book, popular science master John Gribbin tells the dramatic story of the quest that has led us to discover the true age of the Universe (13.8 billion years) and the stars (just a little bit younger). This discovery, Gribbin argues, is one of humankind’s greatest achievements and shows us that physics is on the right track to finding the ‘Theory of Everything’.

13.8 provides an eye-opening look at this cutting-edge area of modern cosmology and physics, and tells the compelling story of what modern science has achieved – and what it can still achieve.

John Gribbin’s numerous bestselling books include In Search of Schrödinger's Cat, Science: A History and The Universe: A Biography. He is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sussex and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and was described as ‘one of the finest and most prolific writers of popular science around’ by the Spectator.

The Sceptical Gardener

The Sceptical Gardener (Hardback)

The Thinking Person’s Guide to Good Gardening

Ken Thompson

How are birds linked to house prices?

How can a gardener improve the

flavour of their vegetables?

Do wildflowers really thrive in poor soil?

In this collection of articles from The Telegraph, biologist and gardening columnist Ken Thompson takes a scientific look at some of the greater – and lesser – questions faced by gardeners everywhere in a bid to sort the genuine wisdom from the hokum.

What is the ideal temperature for a compost heap? What do bees do that improves strawberries? Why are gardeners in literature always such dummies? This is an expert’s gardening miscellany, aimed at making you not necessarily a better gardener, but probably a far more thoughtful one.

Ken Thompson was for twenty years a lecturer in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield. He writes regularly on gardening for the Daily Telegraph. His previous book, Where Do Camels Belong? (Profile, 2014), was described as ‘lively and punchy’ by the Sunday Times.

A delight … if you have simply had enough of people refusing to take gardening seriously, I suggest you buy The Sceptical GardenerThe Spectator

How to Sound Cultured

How to Sound Cultured (Hardback)

Master The 250 Names That Intellectuals Love To Drop Into Conversation

Hubert Van Den Bergh

Thomas W. Hodgkinson

'Damn, all my cheating secrets revealed. In book form' Stephen Fry

Which philosopher had the maddest hairstyle? Which novelist drank 50 cups of black coffee every day? What on earth did Simone de Beauvoir see in Jean-Paul Sartre?

How to Sound Cultured offers a wry and yet profoundly useful look inside the mirrored palaces of high culture. Covering such inscrutable characters as Heidegger, Montaigne, Kahlo and Lévi-Strauss (apparently not just a designer of jeans), inscrutable polymaths Thomas W. Hodgkinson and Hubert van den Bergh – the author of the acclaimed How to Sound Clever – have done the hard work of sorting the cultural wheat from the chaff.

Read this book and you’ll never again mistake Rimbaud for Rambo or Georg Lukacs for George Lucas, you’ll know precisely when to drop Foucault’s name into a conversation and how to pronounce ‘Borgesian’, and you’ll learn many more essential pointers for the intellectual life.

Hubert van den Bergh is the author of How to Sound Clever (Bloomsbury, 2010). He has written for The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian and appeared on Vanessa Feltz’s BBC Radio 2 show.

Thomas W. Hodgkinson is the author of the novel Memoirs of a Stalker (Silvertail, 2015). He writes regularly for The Spectator and the Daily Mail, and is a contributing editor at The Week.

This admirable book is a wholly welcome antidote to the semi-demi-literacy of the 21st century. Go out and buy it!Colin Dexter on How to Sound Clever
Terrific. With almost miraculous concision, they combine biographical information and often quite bracing judgments with jokes, some great quotations and lots of arresting little facts.Daily Mail
