A Global History of the Mobile Phone

Jon Agar

Mobile phones are a ubiquitous technology with a fascinating history. There are now as many mobile phones in the world as there are people. We carry them around with us wherever we go. And while we used to just speak into them, now mobiles are used to do all kinds of tasks, from talking to twittering, from playing a game to paying a bill.

Jon Agar takes the mobile to pieces, tracing what makes it work, and puts it together again, showing how it was shaped in different national contexts in the United States, Europe, the Far East and Africa. He tells the story from the early associations with cars and the privileged, through its immense popular success, to the rise of the smartphone.

Few scientific revolutions affect us in such a day-to-day way as the development of the mobile phone. Jon Agar's deft history explains exactly how this revolution has come about – and where it may lead in the future.

Jon Agar is currently Senior Lecturer in Science and Technology Studies at University College London and was previously director of the National Archive for the History of Computing.

Agar reassesses the ever-evolving nature of this multitasking machine clamped to the ears of billions … with characteristically clear precision.Nature

Project Sunshine

Project Sunshine (Hardback)

How science can use the sun to fuel and feed the world

Steve McKevitt

Tony Ryan

It’s an astonishing fact that capturing all the energy in just one hour’s worth of sunlight would enable us to meet the planet’s food and energy needs for an entire year.

Project Sunshine tells the story of how scientists are working to reconnect us to the ‘solar economy’, harnessing the power of the sun to provide sustainable food and energy for a global population of 10 billion people: an achievement that would end our dependence on ‘fossilised sunshine’ in the form of coal, oil and gas and remake our connection with the soil that grows our food.

Steve McKevitt and Tony Ryan describe the human race’s complex relationship with the sun and take us back through history to see how our world became the place it is today – chemically, geologically, ecologically, climatically and economically – before moving on to the cutting-edge science and technology that will enable us to live happily in a sustainable future.

Steve McKevitt is an expert in communications and consumerism. Over a 25-year career his clients have included Nike, Coca-Cola, Deutsche Bank, Sony PlayStation, Harvey Nichols, Motorola, Universal, Virgin, BT and Atari. Steve is chairman of Golden, an ideas agency with clients in the UK, Europe and the USA, and also works as an advisor to national and regional UK government on employment, skills, business innovation and international trade.

Professor Tony Ryan OBE is a polymer chemist at the University of Sheffield. He delivered the 2002 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and regularly appears on Radio 4's Infinite Monkey Cage with Brian Cox and Robin Ince, and has been on In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg.

A ray of sunshine on the issues of food and energy security.Nature
This is an important, much needed book. It shows that things can't go on as they have done: population growth, fossil-fuel burning, greenhouse-gas pollution. But it also explains that they don't need to. Technologies exist, or are on the threshold of existing, that can keep the lights on and keep food on the shelves. Without being Panglossian or diminishing the challenge, Project Sunshine offers rays of hope.Philip Ball, author of Critical Mass and H2O: A Biography of Water
Tony Ryan and Steve McKevitt argue forcefully that if we are to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today, we need to put our local star at the centre of human affairs. They marshal a wide range of scientific research to show that we could all benefit from becoming a society of sun worshippers.Roger Highfield
'A sweeping narrative of past and present, Project Sunshine explores the way we use (and waste) our resources and how solar power may yet solve the energy crisis … with wonderful factual nuggets and handy numbers to have up one's sleeve.Dame Athene DonaldTimes Higher Education

Introducing Wagner

Introducing Wagner (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Kevin Scott

Michael White

Wagner's operatic works rank with the supreme achievements of western culture. But acceptance of Wagner's musical genius is tempered by feelings of misgiving and many believe the composer's underlying ideas to be indefensible. A self-styled social revolutionary, Wagner thought the world could be redeemed through vegetarianism and Aryan philosophy.

Introducing Wagner: A Graphic Guide separates the composer's art from the ideas and the arrogant destructive personal behaviour of the man.

Michael White is an opera critic for the Daily Telegraph and was voted Britain’s least boring music critic by listeners of Classic FM. He has made documentaries about Menotti, Britten and Nielsen and once attempted to explain Wagner's Ring Cycle on TV in half an hour.

Kevin Scott is an award-winning illustrator based in north London

Introducing Empiricism

Introducing Empiricism (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Dave Robinson

Bill Mayblin

Our knowledge comes primarily from experience – what our senses tell us. But is experience really what it seems?

The experimental breakthroughs in 17th-century science of Kepler, Galileo and Newton informed the great British empiricist tradition, which accepts a ‘common-sense’ view of the world – and yet concludes that all we can ever know are ‘ideas’.

In Introducing Empiricism: A Graphic Guide, Dave Robinson – with the aid of Bill Mayblin’s brilliant illustrations – outlines the arguments of Locke, Berkeley, Hume, J.S. Mill, Bertrand Russell and the last British empiricist, A.J. Ayer. They also explore criticisms of empiricism in the work of Kant, Wittgenstein, Karl Popper and others, providing a unique overview of this compelling area of philosophy.

Dave Robinson has taught philosophy for many years and is the author of numerous Introducing titles. He is now a part-time lecturer in Critical Studies and lives in Devon. Bill Mayblin in a north London-based graphic designer.

Introducing Continental Philosophy

Introducing Continental Philosophy (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Christopher Kul-Want

Piero Pierini

What makes philosophy on the continent of Europe so different and exciting? And why does it have such a reputation for being 'difficult'?

Continental philosophy was initiated amid the revolutionary ferment of the 18th century, philosophers such as Kant and Hegel confronting the extremism of the time with theories that challenged the very formation of individual and social consciousness.

Covering the great philosophers of the modern and postmodern eras – from Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida and Deleuze right to up Agamben and ?i?ek – and philosophical movements from German idealism to deconstruction and feminism – Christopher Kul-Want and Piero brilliantly elucidate some of the most thrilling and powerful ideas ever to have been discussed.

Christopher Kul-want is the course director of M.A. Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London. Piero is a graphic designer and illustrator.

Losing It

Losing It (Paperback)

How We Popped Our Cherry Over the Last 80 Years

Kate Monro

In an increasingly sexualised world, how we lose our virginity remains an untold story. Inspired by her Cosmopolitan award-nominated blog, The Virginity Project, Kate Monro sets out to ask men and women from every walk of life, how did it happen for you? Losing It brings together an astonishing collection of stories.

From the experiences of Edna, who lost her virginity in 1940 aged 25, to Charlie, a young, disabled punk rocker whose first-time experience many able-bodied people would envy, Kate reveals the poignant, funny and often surprising truth about other people’s most intimate sexual stories.

Described by the Evening Standard as ‘London’s foremost virgin inquisitor’, Kate Monro, 42, is a blogger, author and journalist.

Stalin's General

Stalin's General (Paperback)

The Life of Georgy Zhukov

Geoffrey Roberts

Marshal Georgy Zhukov is one of military history's legendary names.

He played a decisive role in the battles of Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk that brought down the Nazi regime. He was the first of the Allied generals to enter Berlin and it was he who took the German surrender. He led the huge victory parade in Red Square, riding a white horse, and in doing so, dangerously provoking Stalin's envy.

His post-war career was equally eventful – Zhukov found himself sacked and banished twice, and wrongfully accused of disloyalty. However, he remains one of the most decorated officers in the history of both Russia and the Soviet Union. Since his death in 1974, Zhukov has increasingly been seen as the indispensable military leader of the Second World War, surpassing Eisenhower, Patton, Montgomery and MacArthur in his military brilliance and ferocity.

Making use of hundreds of documents from Russian military archives, as well as unpublished versions of Zhukov's memoirs, Geoffrey Roberts fashions a remarkably intimate portrait of a man whose personality was as fascinating as it was contradictory. Tough, decisive, strong-willed and brutal as a soldier, in his private life he was charming and gentle. Zhukov's relations with Stalin's other generals were often prickly and fraught with rivalry, but he was the only one among them to stand up to the Soviet dictator.

Piercing the hyperbole of the Zhukov personality cult, Roberts debunks many of the myths that have sprung up around Zhukov's life, to deliver fresh insights into the marshal's relations with Stalin, Khrushchev and Eisenhower. A highly regarded historian of Soviet Russia, Roberts has fashioned the definitive biography of this seminal 20th-century figure.

Geoffrey Roberts is a professor of history at the University College Cork, Ireland. He is a frequent contributor to British, Irish and American newspapers.

Dice World

Dice World (Paperback)

Science and Life in a Random Universe

Brian Clegg

LONGLISTED FOR THE 2014 WINTON ROYAL SOCIETY PRIZE FOR SCIENCE BOOKS

As troubling as we pattern-seeking humans may find it, modern science has repeatedly shown us that randomness is the underlying heartbeat of nature.

In Dice World, acclaimed science writer Brian Clegg takes readers on an incredible trip around our random universe, uncovering the truths and lies behind probability and statistics, explaining how chaotic intervention is behind every great success in business, and demonstrating the possibilities quantum mechanics has given us for creating unbreakable ciphers and undergoing teleportation.

He explores how the ‘clockwork universe’ imagined by Newton, in which everything could be predicted given enough data, was disproved bit by bit, to be supplanted by chaos theory and quantum physics. Clegg reveals a world in which not only is accurate forecasting often impossible but probability is the only way for us to understand the fundamental nature of things.

Forget the clockwork universe. Welcome to Dice World, a unique portrait of a startlingly complex cosmos, from the bizarre microscopic world of the quantum to the unfathomable mechanics of planetary movements, where very little is as it seems…

Brian Clegg is a popular science writer whose Dice World and A Brief History of Infinity were both longlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books. He has written for publications including Nature, The Times and BBC Focus.

Oscar Zarate

Father of existentialism or the Eeyore of philosophy?

Known as the first modern theologian, Søren
Kierkegaard was a prolific writer of the Danish ‘golden age’. A philosopher,

importance of the individual, influenced many 20th-century philosophers and

Dave Robinson and Oscar Zarate’s brilliant graphic
guide explains what Kierkegaard means by 'anti-philosophy', and tells an
illuminating story of the strange life and ideas of a man tortured by his
attempts to change the very priorities of Western thought.

Dave Robinson has taught philosophy for many years and is the author of numerous Introducing titles. Oscar Zarate is one of the UK's leading graphic artists. He has illustrated numerous Introducing titles. His graphic novel A Small Killing won the Will Eisner Prize.

Can Anyone Hear Me? (Paperback)

Testing Times with Test Match Special on Tour

Peter Baxter

For 25 years Peter Baxter toured the world for the BBC, producing and commentating on Test Match Special from India and Pakistan to New Zealand and the West Indies.

Drawing extensively on his tour diaries, and with a cast including Henry Blofeld, Jonathan Agnew and the late Christopher Martin-Jenkins, Baxter vividly takes us behind the scenes of TMS on tour – from the threat of arrest in Zimbabwe to commentating from the ramparts of a fort in Sri Lanka.

With summaries of some of the most memorable foreign Tests, this funny and revealing book is the ideal companion to an afternoon in the pavilion.

‘The stories are told with avuncular warmth and no little charm.’ Rob Smyth, The Cricketer

Peter Baxter first worked on Test Match Special in 1966, and was the producer of the programme from 1973-2007.

The joy of Baxter's book is that it communicates a love of cricket and shows why, whatever its flaws, we still need TMS.Michael Billington, Wisden Cricketer, on The Best Views from the Boundary

Cracked (Paperback)

Why Psychiatry is Doing More Harm Than Good

James Davies

Why is psychiatry such big business? Why are so many psychiatric drugs prescribed – 47 million antidepressant prescriptions in the UK alone last year – and why, without solid scientific justification, has the number of mental disorders risen from 106 in 1952 to 374 today?

The everyday sufferings and setbacks of life are now ‘medicalised’ into illnesses that require treatment – usually with highly profitable drugs. Psychological therapist James Davies uses his insider knowledge to illustrate for a general readership how psychiatry has put riches and medical status above patients’ well-being. The charge sheet is damning: negative drug trials routinely buried; antidepressants that work no better than placebos; research regularly manipulated to produce positive results; doctors, seduced by huge pharmaceutical rewards, creating more disorders and prescribing more pills; and ethical, scientific and treatment flaws unscrupulously concealed by mass-marketing.

Cracked reveals for the first time the true human cost of an industry that, in the name of helping others, has actually been helping itself.

James Davies obtained his PhD in medical and social anthropology from the University of Oxford. He is also a qualified psychotherapist (having worked in the NHS), and a senior lecturer in social anthropology and psychology at the University of Roehampton, London. He has delivered lectures at many universities, including Harvard, Brown, CUNY, Oxford and London, and has written articles about psychiatry for the New Scientist, Therapy Today and the Harvard Divinity Bulletin.

He is author of The Importance of Suffering: the value and meaning of emotional discontent (Routledge, 2011). He lives with his wife and daughter in Shepherd’s Bush, London.

Third Man in Havana

Third Man in Havana (Paperback)

Finding the Heart of Cricket in the World's Most Unlikely Places

Tom Rodwell

Courtney Walsh

When Tom Rodwell embarked on a cricketing tour of India, he had only ever thought of the game as great fun.

But the simple joy of the local street kids when his team donated their kit to them made him realise that it could be more than that.

By turns touching and amusing, and imbued with a deep love of the game, Third Man in Havana is the story of the charity cricket programmes ‘Major’ Tom Rodwell has helped run around the world, and of the people he has encountered along the way.

From Be’er Sheva Cricket Club pavilion in Israel – a converted nuclear bomb shelter, useful in the face of Hamas’ regular rocket attacks – to a game of tapeball cricket with ex-Tamil Tiger child soldiers behind barbed wire in Sri Lanka, Rodwell discovered that the heart of the game is beating fast in countries more used to conflict than cricket.

Third Man in Havana is a wonderfully positive story, revealing that the spirit of cricket is alive and well.

Tom Rodwell ran the charity Cricket for Change for eight years, and is now Chairman of the Lord Taverners. This is his first book. Courtney Walsh represented the West Indies from 1984 to 2001, captaining the team in 22 Test matches. He is best known for a remarkable opening bowling partnership along with fellow West Indian Curtly Ambrose for several years and holding the record of most Test wickets from 2000.

Bobby's Open

Bobby's Open (Paperback)

Mr. Jones and the Golf Shot That Defined a Legend

Jack Nicklaus

Steven Reid

TIMES BRITISH SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2013

25th June 1926. Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club is hosting the world's oldest and most prestigious golf tournament – The Open Championship. A stellar field of players has assembled from both sides of the Atlantic hoping to claim victory, including Walter Hagen, Harry Vardon and a rising young amateur from the USA, Bobby Jones.
Already a winner of the US Open and US Amateur Championship, Jones has yet to win a Major event on British soil. To do so now would set him on a path of unrivalled achievement and into the history books as the greatest amateur golfer the world has ever known.

As the competition boils down to the penultimate hole on the final day, Bobby must hold his nerve to pull off a miracle recovery shot that will fire his reputation – and that of the golf course – around the world. Bobby's Open is the inspirational story of a golfing legend and one of the game's defining contests.

Steven Reid blends social history with sporting biography to portray the most famous sportsman of his time, examining why Jones was so adored and the cruel price he ultimately paid for his genius.

Steven Reid is a life-long member of Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, which he captained in 1996 and is currently chairman of its Heritage Committee. Steven is also Chief Medical Officer of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and a member of County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point, West of Ireland. His previous book Get to the Point extolled the virtues of the Harry Colt-designed links at Sligo.

Identify the signs

Get to the truth

Spy the Lie is a fascinating study of deception and a comprehensive lesson in how to identify and combat it.

Featuring case studies based on the authors' real-life experiences in the field – involving 'turned' assets, KGB moles and criminal government officials – it reveals the methodology developed and used by the CIA to detect deception in the realms of counterterrorism and criminal investigation, and shows you how you can apply these techniques in your daily life.

Whether hiring a new employee, investing money, knowing whether your boss is being straight with you, or finding out what your kids have been up to, this ingenious book will enable you to identify deceptive behavior in all its forms, and show you the techniques that will help you reach the truth.

Philip Houston spent 25 years in the CIA, including roles as an investigator and a polygraph examiner. He is credited with developing a detection of deception methodology currently employed throughout the U.S. intelligence and federal law enforcement communities.

Together with Mike Floyd and Susan Carnicero – like Phil, former CIA agents and leading authorities on interviewing, detection of deception, and elicitation – he founded Qverity, a provider of behavioral analysis and screening services for private- and public sector clients worldwide.

Don Tennant is a former National Security Agency analyst, and is now a business/ technology journalist. He has been the recipient of a number of prestigious journalistic awards, including the Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award.
