The Unknown Unknown

The Unknown Unknown (Paperback)

Bookshops and the delight of not getting what you wanted

Mark Forsyth

Mark Forsyth – author of the Sunday Times Number One bestseller The Etymologicon – reveals in this essay, specially commissioned for Independent Booksellers Week, the most valuable thing about a really good bookshop.

Along the way he considers the wisdom of Donald Rumsfeld, naughty French photographs, why Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy would never have met online, and why only a bookshop can give you that precious thing – what you never knew you were looking for.

Mark Forsyth is a blogger and author whose books have made him one of the UK's best-known commentators on words. His book The Etymologicon was a Sunday Times Number One bestseller and was followed by the similarly successful The Horologicon and The Elements of Eloquence. Follow Mark on Twitter @inkyfool

Rock 'n' Roll Soccer

Rock 'n' Roll Soccer (Paperback)

The Short Life and Fast Times of the North American Soccer League

Ian Plenderleith

Rodney Marsh

Superstars, hype, cheerleaders, razzmatazz – the North American Soccer League in its 1970s heyday was a league way ahead of its time. It lured the biggest names of the world game, like Cruyff, Best, Beckenbauer and the greatest of them all, Pelé, to play football as it was meant to be played – without inhibition, to please the fans.

It experimented with rules and innovations that upset purists, and liberated players from the negative tactics of the muddy, hooligan blighted grounds of Europe; then it crashed back down to earth like a rock star’s private jet, bankrupt but laughing all the way.

Acclaimed football writer Ian Plenderleith reveals in all its glory the colour and chaos of the world’s first truly international league.

Ian Plenderleith is a US-based British football writer and journalist. He has been writing about football for the past twenty years for publications including the Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, When Saturday Comes and Soccer America. He lives just outside Washington DC.

Rodney Marsh won nine caps for England between 1971 and 1973 and was best known, in the UK, for playing for Manchester City and Queen's Park Rangers. In the USA he played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies between 1976 and '79, later coaching the club after spells coaching New York United and Carolina Lightnin'. He worked as a pundit for Sky Sports until 2005.

Rock 'n' Roll Soccer is a compelling yomp through the tales that really made the NASL unique, from the 35-yard-line shootout tiebreaker to the Minnesota Kicks' legendary tailgates. There's been nothing like the NASL since, and Plenderleith captures it very well indeed.Inbedwithmaradona
A brilliant and necessary read.Of Pitch and Page
Ian Plenderleith's rip-roaring Rock 'n' Roll Soccer is an account of the 1970s North American Soccer League which serves as a warning of what happens when football chooses to be simply a branch of a global entertainment industry and forgets where it came from on the way.Mark PerrymanBeyond the Froth
This gem of a book is an excellent cultural document of sports and deserves to be read widely (and enjoyed) by even the most jaded of footy fans.Cliff ShepardBertrams Magazine Review

Messi – 2015 Updated Edition

Messi – 2015 Updated Edition (Paperback)

More Than a Superstar

Luca Caioli

Lionel Messi is a mesmerising talent who has continued to astound the world of football ever since assuming his role at the heart of a star-studded Barcelona side in 2004. Overcoming a career-threatening growth hormone deficiency, he has won almost everything there is to win, including an unprecedented four FIFA Ballons d’Or.

Luca Caioli draws on numerous exclusive testimonies to tell Messi’s story, including his parents and extended family, his coaches, those who have played alongside him and even Messi himself.

Messi is a revealing portrait of football’s most unassuming superstar, updated to include the dramatic 2013/14 season and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in which his match-winning performances finally began to win over his harshest critics – his fellow countrymen.

Luca Caioli is the bestselling author of Ronaldo and Torres. A renowned Italian sports journalist, he lives in Spain corresponding for SKY Italia and Corriere della Sera.

The Elements of Eloquence

The Elements of Eloquence (Paperback)

How To Turn the Perfect English Phrase

Mark Forsyth

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER THE ETYMOLOGICON.

‘An informative but highly entertaining journey through the figures of rhetoric … Mark Forsyth wears his considerable knowledge lightly. He also writes beautifully.’ David Marsh, Guardian

Mark Forsyth presents the secret of writing unforgettable phrases, uncovering the techniques that have made immortal such lines as ‘To be or not to be’ and ‘Bond. James Bond.’

In his inimitably entertaining and witty style, he takes apart famous quotations and shows how you too can write like Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde or John Lennon.

Crammed with tricks to make the most humdrum sentiments seem poetic or wise, The Elements of Eloquence reveals how writers through the ages have turned humble words into literary gold – and how you can do the same.

Mark Forsyth is a blogger and author who was given a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary as a christening present and has never looked back. In 2009, he started the Inky Fool blog in order to share his heaps of useless information with a verbose world. His books have made him one of the UK’s best-known commentators on words. Follow Mark on Twitter @inkyfool.

Introducing Alain Badiou

Introducing Alain Badiou (Paperback)

A Graphic Guide

Michael J. Kelly

Piero Pierini

The works of French philosopher Alain Badiou range from novels, poems, 'romanopéras' and popular political treatises to elaborate philosophical arguments engaging with mathematical theory.

Badiou suggests that 'philosophy is always a biography of the philosopher', and throughout all of his writing there is a staunch commitment to emancipatory politics and a radical yet faithful subjectivity. His famous, or infamous, philosophy of emancipation is firmly grounded in his fidelity to the universal idea of a collective life.

Introducing Alain Badiou is an elegantly written and crisply illustrated guide to an essential contemporary thinker.

Michael Kelly is a historian, philosopher and Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Leeds. His research intersects contemporary thought with rigorous, historical research into early medieval existences, and he is very much engaged in the Philosophy of History and the use of the concept of History today. He is a General Editor of both the International Journal for Badiou Studies & Networks and Neighbours, coorganizer of the Philosophies of History and Lacan Read(s) Across the Disciplines seminar series at the University of Leeds.

Piero is an illustrator, artist and graphic designer whose work has twice been included in the Royal College of Art in London. He has illustrated many Introducing titles.

And Some Fell on Stony Ground

And Some Fell on Stony Ground (Hardback)

A Day in the Life of an RAF Bomber Pilot

Leslie Mann

Richard Overy

A unique glimpse of the deadliest profession of the Second World War.

In June 1941, Flight Sergeant Leslie Mann, a tail gunner in a British bomber, was shot down over Düsseldorf and taken into captivity. After the war, wanting to record the experiences of the RAF’s ‘Bomber Boys’, he gave voice to his private thoughts and feelings in a short novella, uncovered only after his death.

Visceral, shocking and unglamorous, this compelling story transmits as rarely before the horrors of aerial warfare, the corrosive effects of fear, and the psychological torment of the young men involved. The sights, sounds, smells, and above all the emotional strain are intensely evoked with a novelist’s skill.

And Some Fell on Stony Ground is introduced by historian Richard Overy, author of the acclaimed book, The Bombing War (2013).

Leslie Mann was born in Penang in 1914, the son of a police inspector. The family later moved to the UK, and Leslie started work as a sound engineer at Elstree Studios. He enlisted in the RAF in 1938, and married in 1939. As a rear gunner and wireless operator with 51 Squadron at Dishforth, Yorkshire, he flew in Whitley bombers. He was shot down on a raid over Düsseldorf on 20 June 1941: all five crew were captured. Repatriated by the Red Cross in 1943, he worked for Pathé News and later became a correspondent in the Korean War and a cameraman in Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising. He then moved to the BBC, for whom he worked as a senior news executive until retirement. He died in 1989.

Richard Overy is an award-winning historian. His book, The Bombing War, was described by Richard J. Evans in the Guardian as ‘the most important book published on the history of the second world war this century’.|Richard Overy is an award-winning historian best known for his remarkable books on the Second World War and the wider disasters of the twentieth century. His most recent book, The Bombing War, was described by Richard J Evans in the Guardian as 'Magnificent … must now be regarded as the standard work on the bombing war … It is probably the most important book published on the history of he second world war this century'

He is Professor of History at the University of Exeter and lives in London.

Under Fire

Under Fire (Paperback)

The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi

Fred Burton

Samuel M. Katz

Benghazi, Libya. 9/11/2012. Just over a year after the fall of Gaddafi, and on the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a group of heavily armed Islamic terrorists had their sights set on the U.S. diplomatic and intelligence presence in the city.

In the prolonged attack, four Americans died, including the American ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, the Information Officer Sean Smith, and two former Navy SEALs, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, working for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Based on confidential eyewitness sources within the intelligence, diplomatic, and military communities, Under Fire is the terrifying account of that night, and of a desperate last stand amid the chaos of rebellion.

Fred Burton is a former State Department counter terrorism deputy chief and one of the world's foremost experts on security, terrorists and terrorist organizations. He is the author of a bestselling memoir, Ghost: Confessions of a Counterterrorism Agent, and Chasing Shadows: A Special Agent’s Hunt to Bring a Cold War Assassin to Justice (Palgrave, 2011). Samuel Katz is an internationally recognized expert on Middle East security issues, international terrorism, and military special operations and counter-terrorism.

Heart-stopping, minute-by-minute detail … a tale of valor on the ground.'Graydon Carter, Vanity Fair
